You should check out the movie on Netflix -- I'm not in the market for cancer therapy (fortunately) -- but this looked like a really good option, and they deal with the study methodology used by others. I hope I never have to use this for me or anyone I love, but in the cases they presented compared vs. radiation/chemo therapies -- results were better for his therapy. I think there's a lot more to this story than obvious quakery.

  2. This isn't new.. on (CD) Pirates Take to the Ocean · · Score: 1

When I lived in Taiwan in '98 this was already pretty common knowledge -- these ships aren't operated by garden variety pirates, but criminal mafias (mostly Chinese) that have their hands in anything that can make them money.

US software firms are being too greedy considering the average income of many of these countries.. Sure there's a rich elite that can afford anything (& more) than we buy in the US, but these companies watched the market for these product build.

I worked in a local Taiwanese distributor, and when they're selling the pirated version for $4-5 US, you don't have a chance of selling many $35-40 games. Sell them for $10-$15 and people would have had the pride of owning a legitimate copy push them over the edge.. Of course, we could never convince Global companies to go for that.

My opinion: The media companies created this. They won't be able to sell the full priced versions anyway. Sell merchandise and live with it!

  3. On the other side (donning asbestos suit) on Doubleclick Exits The Ad-Tracking Business · · Score: 4, Insightful

As a marketer and a long-time heavy internet user, I think we've gone a bit far here.

There are a lot of benefits to the profiling and targeting, and the real potential for encroaching on my privacy is relatively limited. The company I work for would not exist without targeted marketing based on profiles built up on individuals.

We don't care what the person's sex/race/religion/politics are unless that data means the person is more likely to buy (and thus is intersted in our product). Even if we had that kind of information, we're a business.

Think about it from the other side: do I need to see ads for products I'll never buy? I'd much rather people give me offers and deals that match things I already buy. It's more useful to me.

You won't get there from here without targeting. This targeting gives us free (network) TV/sports/etc. It supports magazines we subscribe to at $1 an issue instead of $5. It supports websites we read, including this one. Slashdot is pretty obvious targeting, but CNN.com?

I do believe there's an important balance, but still -- we shouldn't be rejoicing about this.

    Flame away.

  4. CD/DVD-ROM Drives on Are PowerMacs Compatible with Generic PC Hardware? · · Score: 1

I have tried in the past to use other CD-ROM drives to upgrade Mac CD-ROM, and I have to warn you that Apple has the somewhat annoy habit of putting their own ROM chip on the drives. The kicker is that if the system doesn't recognize the ROM it will not support the drive and the you have to run out and buy a third party CD-ROM driver. Even if it's a similar model from the same manufacturer of the Apple model, you'll still get bit on this one. FWB put out a CD-ROM Toolkit that supported many drives. Also, if you own a CDR you can use the driver Adaptec provides to read from a CD-ROM.. Haven't dared a DVD upgrade yet.
