  1. Ghost in the Shell, Akira, The Matrix on Essential Anime · · Score: 2

Your list is simply incomplete without Akira.

And Ghost in the Shell is simply stunning. Watch it, now!

And The Matrix is one of the best Anime movies ever. It just happens to use live actors and not be from Japan.

  2. Red Mars Green Mars Blue Mars on NASA Prototype: Could It Make Mars Breathable? · · Score: 4

Before we get a lot of half-thought out replies, everybody should go out and read the series of books Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson. The series deals, as accurately as possible, with the colonization and terraforming of Mars. Mr. Robinson is a stickler for detail; in fact, it gets a little boring at times (I never thought I would read so much about the geology of Mars). On the other hand, he's a stickler for scientific detail, and addresses some key points, such as:

"Can we develop a reasonable atmosphere?" It's tricky--Mars's crust and elemental makeup is different, it has a low gravity, and has greater elevation variation than Earth. A good atmosphere at sea level may mean the majority of the world has an atmosphere similar to the top of Everest.

We've done some nasty stuff to Earth. Is it right to ruin the natural state of ANOTHER planet, too?

Water. Is there water on mars, anyway, and if there's not, what can we do?

    Surviving in low gravity.

Lots more. In any case, I'm sure many questions will be raised by people commenting on this story. I'm just as sure that the majority of them are at least mentioned in the RGB Mars books. Go do yourself a favor if you're interested in this story, and check these books out.

Boy now weren't most of those international domains?

Interesting question. From back in the day, I thought that they were all US only. (And it's pretty believable that the US would have an ego like that, isn't it?) But RFC1591 and IANA seem to agree with you. .com, .org, and .net are all intented to be international in nature.

To save you a click, IANA says:

    • GOV = US only
    • EDU = US only
    • MIL = US only
    • COM = anybody
    • NET = anybody
    • ORG = anybody
    • INT = organizations established by international treaties between governments

But you can find plenty of people that state or imply that .com is for US commercial interests, so I don't feel too bad for being confused.

Oh well. I'm going to try to get myself registered as a .int just for the hell of it.

  5. Weird top level domain on EU Ministers Approve ".eu" Top-Level Domain · · Score: 1

Everybody knows the big US domains (.com, .org, .net, .edu, .gov). And anybody halfway with it knows about country codes too. (.de, .uk, etc.)

Additionally, most old timers remember when .mil addresses used to be more common (and often used, too!), and some of use even remember the old .arpa addresses. And the European Union currently has a .int address. But has anybody found a .nato address? In theory, the exist, but the closest I've ever come has been the NATO home page.

  6. We've already lived through this. on Linux Users Unscathed By ILOVEYOU · · Score: 2

Linux and Unix software is pretty immune to attacks like the one exploited by ILOVEYOU. In my mind, there are two reasons for this:

    1. We've already lived through such attacks. We haven't already forgotten The Internet Worm, have we? It happened back in 1988, so I'm guessing there are readers who don't remember it. Do yourself a favor and at least check out This Executive Summary of what the worm was.

    2. Open source lets us learn from our past. In the Unix world, no software with blatant holes has those holes for long. Code is scrutinized for previous exploits. Nobody wants to get burned twice. On the other hand, in the closed-source world, it's likely that the developer won't know every previous software exploit ever, and he's likely to make the same mistake that someone else did. We will never see ANOTHER program that works like the internet worm; we now know to look for those type of exploits.

We might not be immune, but it's nearly impossible that we woule make the same mistake twice. That's the beauty of open source.

It's an axiom: when a web site is good AND fast, it attracts more and more viewers. There are no good fast web sites; there are only popular, good but slow websites. I expect Slashdot to be fast for about a month, at which point it will be slow as it ever was.

At least a lot more people will be reading, though.

  9. If you can, skip the ISO on ISO Image Web Site And CAD Program · · Score: 1

I realize that some people still have a need for the ISO images, but if you're just looking to do an single install, skip the image and do a network install directly.

I recently did this for Mandrake 7.0, and had a great time. I downloaded a single floppy, booted off of it, told it my essential network numbers, and four hours later, I had a working system. Sweet! Admittedly, I've got a DSL line, which made things tolerable, but you're not going to be happy downloading an ISO image over a 56K modem either.

A very cool feature here (and it may apply to the ISO install too, I don't know) is that if you installed in expert mode, you were asked, "We can install these optional crypto rpm's, which we will download from foreign web sites. Proceed?" Sweet.

I haven't done this, but if I were a sysadmin doing a multiple install across my site, I STILL wouldn't get the ISO image. I'd use wget to mirror one of the Mandrake web sites locally, and do network installs from that.
