I just got my Lifebook P Series (the little guy with the Crusoe) and so far things are working well I am still looking for sound drivers and haven't even tried to get the modem working yet but everything else that I have tried seems to work just fine.. if anyone knows of sound drivers for this machine I will have basically all I need to get rid of Windows (playing DVD's is all I use windows for right now)

NCD has made combo machines for years we use several here at work and they work fine (though we are 99% Citrix based). Their NCD Business Network Computers line looks like exactly what you need though I don't know the price.

  7. DO NOT E-MAIL on Is Your Elected Official Really Listening? · · Score: -1, Redundant

As has been stated above several times and as I stated in one of the last discussions of this topic (I used to work for a Senator).. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES EXPECT YOUR E-MAIL TO BE READ BY A PERSON... occasionally if they notice a flood on a particular topic staffers may present a breakdown of numbers received by e-mail but rarely if ever will you get a decent response to an e-mail.. forget for a moment that you are a computer geek and probably forgot how to write with a pen (other than a light pen) years ago and break out some stationary and write or type a letter to your representative.. If you are going to be in Washington you could try and schedule a short appointment to present your view.. but like the guy above stated so well.. DON'T WRITE AN E-MAIL!!

  8. Re:Lobbying Congresspeople on Slashdot in Politics? · · Score: 2, Insightful
Having worked for a senator for a year I can tell you the one letter with alot of signatures will get the least notice followed by form letters/postcards... those seemed to be the most common ways of mass lobbying and were for the most part ignored (ie they got added to a list and got a generic form letter back) The most effective way is to write a personal letter and to follow the following simple rules:

Be very consise but specific about what bill you are writing about.

Tell whether you are for or against this bill.

List what reasons you have for being against it.

Knowing this crowd you will also need to be very clear and non-technical as much as is possible as it will be a political staffer reading the mail not a techy.

Be polite and non-confrontational and you will receive the best response.

I would suggest that you also limit your letters to your local congressman, your 2 state senators, and possibly the leadership of each party in both the house and the senate as out of state/district letters will usually go to the bottom of the pile.

Take the time to mail a physical letter as it will receive more notice than an e-mail. Also check out this site as it is a very good reference on how to write your letter.

Well this got a little long but hopefully it will help some of you who want to get involved to have a gameplan.

  9. Re:It's called salary on How Do Companies Pay for "On-Call" Support? · · Score: 1

I work in a Hospital IT department that sounds similar to the original poster and I agree with you that many things are mission critical and cannot wait but many are not: e-mail first off, Internet, Word and Excel (at least here), among others.. These I would assume are the ones that can "wait until morning" at least that's how we work it here..

we get paid for the week based on 28 call units (4 a day) for a week of oncall time and get paid roughly $9 a unit (~$250/callweek) plus mileage and overtime pay if we have to work onsite.
