Recently I've been receiving several E-mails per day imploring I should sign up to accept credit cards.
And now it seems some centralised effort is spoiling the fun for the spammers!
This precedent only threatens spammers, it does not make any hint that (unwanted) filtering or blocking now becomes an option.
It is directed at the root of the evil.
No they can't block the spam but they can go after the spammers.
As AbFab was a national company with mainly national clients this was relatively easy.
It's still just as hard to fight against spammers from far away.
Xs4all is running a trial with a few hundred subscribers on a DNS-based anti-spam system, looks good so far and might be available to all in the future.
But you miss part of the picture, already before this company got it's clients in trouble.
AbFab had sold their services to a few big names in Holland and this made them get on their knees begging the public for forgiveness about the spam they had send by means of AbFab.
Any legal solution has to include punishment for the companies trying to sell the goods, not just the mail boys.
And they are generaly in your own country!
Funny how we in The Netherlands interpret that separation of church and state so differently.
Our thought is that all have the right to education and as a consequence the state (taxpayer) foots the bill.
At the same time we think that parents have the right to decide what type of education is appropriate and they set up their school board along their political or religious beliefs.
So the parents decide and the state pays.
(Off course the same amount for any type of school)
And because the manfacturers are at least in part responsible for the recycling effort they now pay attention to the materials they use in new equipment.
Not only the sort of materials but aswell that it's easier/ possible to separate them for re-use.
And especially plastic components are now marked with a code for easy sorting.
In countries where this system is in effect it has been shown where there's a will, there's a way
For years the Dutch governement has studied a similar system.
But they could not find an affordable and reliable technology.
So now they propose a charge for distance covered regardless wich road you're on.
Only the time of day will be recorded and influence the charges.
If the Brits pull this off it'll be nice for Dutch car owners like me, as I make at least half my kilometers on foreign roads I'm realy pissed off at having to pay Dutch tax while abroad!
As an info for the Americans reading, in Europe these schemes are generally sold on the "Environmental" ticket as they hope it'll get you out of your car into public transport.
And as the UK has one of the most backward train systems in Europe this is a challenge....
If the'd get dizzy that would imply their speed is different to the rotation.
And that means they would reach the other side of the slope and start to slip down backwards...
You conveniently forget the largest National Socialist (=Nazi) party before WW II outside of Germany was the British, led by a member of the Royal Family
And the fact there are/were no Neo-Nazis in Westmister in recent years has all to do with the lack of a democratic (=representative) election system in the UK...
Some story!.... from an AC.
And likely from that fabled UK, the place where you're supposed to be able to speak freely.
Is that why historically there is this one place,in Hide Park, where this is not punishable? IDIOT!
Yet I fully agree about the French Petain government being a giant blot on the French history that nearly every Frenchman tries to deny.
There is no more "behind the schemes"(?) drafting of laws in Europe as there is in the UK, as a matter of fact there is a representative number of British European Parliamentarians to oversee this....
Talking about the British Parliament, how in the world is it, for example, possible that your government can publish it's annual budget and subsequently raise the fuel tax hours later, without any prior discussion in that fabled Parliament!
The difference between the British and the other Europeans is that the others are not exposed to your (or is it an Australians??) stinking press.
Yes Britain has an enviable Parliamentary History, but as so many things with the adjective "British" it's before all "History".
I don't see why we should have a blanket law due to the preoccupations of a single country.
You're ill informed, it's certainly a majority of European people that support a possible legal recourse against hate speech etc.
And it's based in the recent past as well as in the example of WW II, many Europeans abhor the type of "freedom" that too often leads to excesses and ultimately massacres in the US.
I fully agree that existing laws should and can be applied, the Net is a new medium, just a tool, but it's the message that counts.
But regardless what new regulations (not laws) come out of Brussels it'll still be the national laws and courts that make the final decision.
And interpretations differ a lot between the nations!
If a EU member state is able to show the European directive is covered in existing law I see little reason for them to change anything.
Yet I'm afraid that's my wishful thinking, Law as a profession is in Europe rapidly becoming as smelly as in the US of A and it's lawyers writing laws (for lawyers to make money).
Then if you squweek too much, may say - encypted email can contain terrorist messages - everyone run for your life and hang all encryptors. It happened before in Europe - many times. It will happen again.
You are talking about the present situation in one corner of Europe, the United Kingdom.
These boys already have law that forces you to hand over the encription key when asked.
And they are the ones complaining loudest about European initiatives to limit certain extreme uses/abuses of the net...
I'm afraid I have to agree, it might have been sent from / through asian servers but the products advertised are near exclusively American.
And for the largest part useless and/or unobtainable here in Europe.
What the rest of the world needs is legislation (not only!) in the US against those trying to sell via this irritating system.
This technique has been used for years and quite succesfull on other insects.
Chances of eradicating an entire species are rather slim, especially with insects so don't worry.
But because it's cheap even poor countries can afford to repeat this treatment over and over
Contrary to the use of pesticides there are no side- or after effects like getting immune strains and spreading/leaking throughout the ecosystem.
If there is any bad side effect it is the further decline of uninhabited/uninhabitable land.
But beneath it's utter nonsense.
It has already been proven in other places in Eastern Africa that it'll take only one human generation to have the same over-population in the newly available territories
At the expense of the quite pristine nature there is till now.
Humanity should learn from the errors made in the developed world with regard to natural preservation and not make the same known errors over and over again.
Would you say the same when they (those American corporations) used your form of "freedom" to trample on your own rights?
What makes you think people in China do not want or deserve that freedom you are so used to?
What is a culture that claims to have "our higher ideals" but keeps them to itself?
You WILL be troubled by this when your friends and neighbours find out about your selfish stance
I pitty you!
It's most definitely worth fighting this scorch of the internet.
On my E-mail address that I use since '97 I get 5-10 of these junk mails per day!
And when I'm opening them on my Windows machine there's a fair chance they generate all kinds of nasty side effects like masses of pop-ups, plant cookies and spyware.
This is not what I have an E-mail account for.
As a matter of fact I think you are a bit of a looser to react the way you do, how would you like it when the village idiots would piss on your porch after every beer they had??
And about your remark: "lead to more and more restrictions and more and more freedoms being taken away"
This is the dumbest argument I've seen in this discussion
It's like saying the law that requires us all to drive on the same side of the road is a limitation of freedom.....
The internet is a public place and as all public places it has a few basic rules to function at it's best for most.
"Christian" was not the best generalisation, maybe I should have used "Religious".
Yet this changes nothing about the fact these parties typically have a longing to a time and lifestyle past.
Your error is to infer that either more or less government interference is typically associated with conservatism or progressivism.
And now it seems some centralised effort is spoiling the fun for the spammers!
Look at the example I copied to my website!

Why not make a new POP or alias adress?
Xs4all allows you 5 unique POP boxes with 10 aliases each!
And you can allways abandon one for another.
AbFab had sold their services to a few big names in Holland and this made them get on their knees begging the public for forgiveness about the spam they had send by means of AbFab.

That would be curious, with Vikings sooner being of Germanic than of Celtic decend.
Take a hammer in your favourite hand,
Put your other hand on the table.
Hit the hand on the table with the hammer.
You've just discovered pain....
But does that mean it did not exist before?

Jees!
And likely from that fabled UK, the place where you're supposed to be able to speak freely.
Is that why historically there is this one place,in Hide Park, where this is not punishable? IDIOT!

Ah, OK :-)
Yes I like to see the cinisism.

For the sake of Democracy in Australia I sure hope it is a committee of the parliament and it includes all parties......
I know I'm repeating myself but there must have been a reason that the book "1984" was written by George Orwell to take place in the UK....
