One barrier to linux gaming is the lack of availability in tools & standards. SVGALib is a good start, but it doesn't support all video cards (read: voodoo banshee, et al) or acceleration. Granted, XFree86 is getting there in terms of supporting modern video hardware, but X wasn't designed for gaming . It's a nice networking gui, and it's suitable for business apps, but it sucks for game programming. Linux also needs an interface with comperable functionality to DirectSound and DirectInput. Right now, I use Linux, but after playing with writing a tile-engine based RPG for linux, I was forced to admit that even DirectX is better for game development (even if does use the dreaded COM). What we need on Linux right now isn't more games, but a better interface for multimedia programming, opening the door to the masses of game programmers who don't want to re-invent the wheel or work with a big clunky programming interface.
