Under Linux, I would not buy a P4. It is just too damn expensive. If you want performance and are running something other win 9x, go with the Dual Athlon. It kicks butt and costs less than a P4. The only thing faster right now is the dual 1.7 P4 Xeons, but you could buy a least couple of dual Althons and cluster them for the price of a Dual P4 Xeon.

Some of those features are overkill. Sure they stop spam but they will also stop legitimate email from being received if the dns setup is wrong or somebody is sending mail from there linux box without a DNS address.

Also limiting the amount of email any one machine can send you over a period of time can cause problems for legitimate mailinglists if setup wrong.

Sure spam is a problem but these agressive filtering methods just introduce more problems. Users have to learn to stop giving out their email address everywhere and placing them on their website for crawlers to steal.

Laptop replacement? That's nothing. Canada's rebel.com is coming out with a server that is based on the transmeta chips. It apparently runs fairly fast and requires only minimal power to run. If these processors could hand web servers and such, Rebel could take on Sun's Cobalt in the small rack mount server market and save companies lots of money with the current higher memory costs.

  8. Is the ISP the problem or the phonelines? on On Starting a Successful ISP? · · Score: 1
Before you look astsetting up a country ISP you must look at the quality of the phone system. Disconnection problems may not be the ISP fault but the fact that the phoneline are still using old equipment.

I know a guy who lives in the country in the states and they have connection/bandwidth problems but the problems for the most part are all phone company related. The phone company instead of replacing the rotary phone equipment with touchtone equipment just added equipment to the central office that makes the touchtone work over the rotary system. Make pretty much any big downloads impossible.

Also in the country you have to worry more about electrical interfence and surges along the phonelines.

Mozilla has lots of potential. It renders nested tables as quickly as IE. It handles inline frames, XML. The problem is that sometimes it doesn't render normal everyday html correctly. So unless that changes it will die. BTW why are these problems addressed yet? The Pre-release came out several months ago and though M16 is better it is not much closer being ready for release.
