  1. Not the issue... on Microsoft Trial Sent Back To Lower Court · · Score: 1

The issue is wether MS used their monopoly power to crush their competitors (in IEs case Netscape).

It's definetly a bad thing to have competition eliminated from any market.

  2. Won't always work on Checksumming Webpages Patented · · Score: 1
This won't always work anyway. A lot of pages contain dynamic bits (time, date, weather etc...) that change all the time. So this won't always work.

Thankfully alot of these pages use features like RSS or other types of syndication so you can still get the latest headlines via a program like Radio

  3. Yes or No is almost worthless on Technology Issues by Candidate · · Score: 1
Yes or No is almost worthless, It's the long answers that really matter. If the only reason I want the right to business domains given to the owner of the trademark is because I own a lot trademarks then just reading the yes/no answer is useless. I might agree with the answer but not for the same reason.

What is really interesting about this article is the reasons behind each candidates choices. Make sure to find out why each of the candidates has a certain point of view on an issue.

Of course sifting through the answer of a politician for the truth is enough to give anyone a headache...

  4. Great letter but... on An Open Letter From Bob Young · · Score: 1
... Redhat isn't for everyone. Alot of the changes being made to RH seem to be taking it further and further from the hardcore user. Features offered that hinder users that like to get in and tinker with everything seem to be showing up more and more. This ins't a bad thing! It simply means that maybe that hardcore users might prefer to run a different distribution.

But don't come down too hard on RH for this, they are helping to bring Opensource to the masses, which is a VERY GOOD THING. Take one look at the alternative and tell me otherwise.

    Cheers!

  5. Neat hack but... on More On The Compaq iPAQ Linux Handheld · · Score: 2
...wouldn't it be neat if we could really take advantage of the power of X on a PDA?

Imagine connecting the Xserver on your handheld to the Xclient on your PC :) All you'd need is networking support for the PDA.

With a fast network this could really rock, you could offload all the processor intensive stuff onto your PC/whatever and just have the handheld render the graphics.

With the coming of net appliances and such this seems to me like a really great way to run your household.

But unless we do stuff like this, why would we run X on a handheld at all? I mean it might be better than Windows CE, but Palm OS was designed from the ground up for PDA's I can't see taking a huge piece of software like Windows or X to a handheld unless there are some inherent advantages in doing so.

It would really be cool to see this evolve beyond just another "neat hack".

  6. Privately Funded Space Exploration? on NASA Rolls Out Mars Mission Plans · · Score: 2

Although I have the utmost respect for NASA and it's accomplishments, maybe it's time for somthing new. Ever since the Apollo program funding for space exploration has steadily decreased. NASA's crowning achievement (the shuttle) is old technology. Maybe it's time for a new way of doing things? We are already seeing signs of privatization in the space industry, and i'm not just talking about Mir being used as a space hotel for tourists. Projects like the Xprize could lead to a new era in space travel. The first is bbeing prize is given for simply getting into space. But future prizes could be awarded for say the first team to return a sample from Mars. Just my 2cents but I definetly think space travel should move away from Government organizations...
