I am more than happy artists are releasing their music in MP3, for obvious reasons, but the article states that the music will have copyright and piracy protection built in.
They will be using the "if I give it a password it must be safe" security model which we all know is a bunch of BS.(Liquid Audio, MSAudio, etc...)
The Really cool thing is that they are making players cheap enough to do this, and they will only get cheaper.
The new players are seriously sweet, and some of the new ones like the Lyra have support for those IBM MicroDrives.....lots of space for lots of music.
yeah....uh what ever happened to the Slash code? I though Rob was going to release it every so often...now it seems he always is to busy to release it. I enjoyed running the slash code...it makes the real spaghetti taste even better.
Anyways, I think Rob stopped after pre.03 or something....I gotta check. -Davidu
I disagree. This author uses the term geek and nerd as one in the same. I think a geek is a nerd that has social skills. I know that I am social, and yet at the same time like to find time to myself and a computer. I guess slashdot is an example of geeks. Those who post I would think are social in real life. What do you guys think? -davidu -Davidu
Our software development takes place across a broad spectrum of computer platforms, helped by the highly valued contributions of talented individuals around the world.
You can use our software on a wide variety of computer systems, including such leading-edge platforms as BeOS and Linux. Other supported operating systems range from Unix-powered workstations to Macintosh, Amiga to Acorn/RISC OS to OS/2, and even a couple you might have heard of from a company called Microsoft.
I think they have the right atitude; they support as much as they can. They also support the open-source community. By supporting an enourmous number of platforms and involving outside developers this company seems to be doing well.
I think we will see more companies use this type of model as more alternative OSs become popular.
More platforms + more developers = better code and more users. -Davidu
Well I tried the MetaModeration today and I liked it. I think it should be made clearer that:
People are NOT Moderating the comment, rather the Moderation it recieved.
On the same moderation issue, one of the most important things to do is to know who anonymous posters are. (for Rob)
Here is an example of a way to do it:
Like many newspapers, the New York Times publishes anonymous letters to the editor, however the editors of the paper verify the identity of the writer, they just don't publish it. Rob has moved in that direction and I applaud it.
Think about this: 1) Rob never needs to look at who posts anonymously, but he can if a problem arrises. 2) It leaves the possibility to change cowards karma despite being anonymous. (not sure how that would work out) just my $.02, -Davidu
I guess you could call me "in-the-know" about SDMI, MP3, and all that since I work at mp3.com. For the record, if you check mp3.com and dmusic.com. Both our tests confirmed that unfuck.exe actually removes the security wrapper. It does not, as you claim, simply re-record output to disk.
I hope this clears this up. Microsoft's SDMI compliant solution is crackable...with no sound lost.

Let's be honest - 99.9% of mp3's that are currently downloaded are probably pirated or promos
Actually I was listening to the CEO of MusicMatch the other day and he had some numbers that were pretty interesting. According to him, only 9% of the MP3's on the net are pirated. Yes that was 9%, not 90%.
I intern at MP3.COM and I didn't get any options. I love the company, but maybe I should have asked instead of keeping my mouth shut...
Seriously though, the stock will settle down to the 30's I think and then pick up. Right now, their revenue is 85% advertising based, on just a few advertisers, so they really need to do some conventional advertising to pick up artists.
If MP3.COM would say, hand out cards and stickers at concerts, they would reach a crowd that: a) obviously likes music, and b) probably makes music.
For MP3.COM to really take off and make a profit, they will need to get some bands that get real airplay. They need to converge the digital medium with say radio. Get some stations to play MP3.COM bands for example. That would help bring awareness to the site and the artists. Just my $.02,
Virid, come on, dude! Rob has released upto pre-.3 plus patches on the slash-help list. the Slash code is in active development, with a news server interface in production, and many other interfaces being developed. I run a Slash based site, and many others do also. Don't be so negative until you know all the facts. Slash.3 will be skipped, and Rob will release.4 w/ moderation as soon as he has a chance. Why don't you join the effort and not just complain that you can't 'tar -zxvf' it and have it work.
The only thing I could recommend for Rob to do would be to add the slash-help link to the code page.
Nice Spelling...no, really I love users, they make me laugh all the time. Plus, most of the time they are amazed you know how to fix problems so quickly. (I mean they didn't figure it out after 4 hours!:) The toys are great also!
You theory is correct, but I know it takes light 8 minutes to reach us from the sun, That means it is less from earth to mars. 45 minutes is a long time-- to long. But your point is well made none the less.
I am sure it is tied to the/. servers aswell. Use slashv2 even though I have never heard of it working for anyone...I was damn near close once after about two hours of hacking it.
I think that unless a person cannot afford a program like photoshop they shuld pay for it. I can understand a student wanteing to expand his/her skills with usefull software, even if it is usually expensive. So in that instance I understand why people pirate. There is no reason, however, to pirate games. They are not expensive, they are a luxery, and if you can't afford them you sholdn't be worrying about games anyway. Just my $.02
The movie of the year was cube...I loved it. People that think cool math rules. Reagrdless of how good you are, would like it. Everyone else would also! I highly suggest it. Search yahoo.com if you want more info.

This is very cool, but is it worth a double-post
Don't sweat the flames though, I still love SlashDot!
