I like the idea that this being posted on slashdot means their list of IPs is going to get quite large and unwieldy. Are we all going to get extradited? Free trip to UK?
"Problem is very little is UV reflective in nature. so to him man made items will stand out significantly during twilight hours."
I would speculate that very little can see UV light, is either the cause or effect of this.
A bird says: Hey baby, I may be pretty bland compared to other potential mates, but check out my superfine UV colored feathers, oh yeh! Oh they just look like a dull brown... damnit, if only I had an advanced brain and opposable thumbs I could invent a black light and get laid.
Wait, maybe that's exactly what the inventor of raves was thinking...
I would guess so, but the difference being where there is a variation in a pigment that reflects more or less UV, and thus the difference you perceive wouldn't be something anyone else perceived. Might be interesting for embedding images or info into something that only you can see. Might also be annoying if there was some variation that no one else noticed, and thus you said "We need to clean that splotch off there" and everyone else looked at you like you were crazy.
Is UV light the spectrum they use at hotels to see all those nasty stains? Somethings are better left unseen...
This was exactly what I was thinking. I don't know if such a spectrum shift is possible just by the UV passing through the new material, but if so, then I think this is probably more plausible.
Is it possible that somehow UV light is being shifted into a visible spectrum when it passes through the lens? The cones in our eyes are pretty limited in what light they react to. Not sure if it's possible to alter light in this way just by it passing through a material, but if so, I think this would be a more plausible explanation.
Waaah? So if black light bulbs look purple to me, then I have UV vision? I thought that was natural, and they were called black lights only because they don't illiumnate anything except what reacts to the UV light.
"How one kilogram of mass directly converted to energy is so much fricking energy that it would probably power all of civilization for a year or more? So now burning (hint, just a chemical action) some dead dinosaur is releasing the energy equivilent of 160 TONNES?"
No! Nuclear reactions like fission and fusion are what convert tiny amounts of mass into huge amounts of energy!
Burning fossil fuels is a chemical reaction, that generally to my knowledge just changes chemical bonds, releasing energy from some of them. Mass is not destroyed in chemical reactions, to my knowledge.
This was exactly what a guy did when I caught him taking pictures up a coworkers skirt. It was extremely stressful for me because I was the only one who saw it, and he had 20+ years with the company when I only had 2. He actually tried to delete the photos when he was confronted by management(he didn't know I saw him) and when they were like "What are you doing with your phone?" he then pulled the SD card out and broke it in half. He did get fired, but none of his friends believed it happened and I became the bad guy in their eyes.
"your posts have a score of -1 by default. When this is the case, no-one bothers to mod you down anymore" -This is because by default most people will not see these posts.
Modding is definitely misused. People will post their inflammatory opinion, and get lots of up mods from people with the same attitude, as a way to say, "yes I share your opinion".
The problem: People spend there mod points in a way that is more like stackoverflow, where they agree with or support someone else's opinion. Stackoverflow is great, but that is not the system in place here at Slashdot. The fix: People should understand what insightful and clever is, and not mod things up or down just based on whether they share the same opinion. That's why they are called moderation points, and not votes.
Really you should have to go through a little quiz that makes sure you understand what the definition of insightful is. Some examples that you mod, and see how well you do.
If I read someone's code and they threw an exception, I'd be trying to figure out what the error/exception condition was they had detected. Abusing exception handling just to break out of a loop, will lead to some very misleading code. At least with a loop label or goto, it is clear what your goal is.
Not to mention the fact that if you are using any kind of framework that automatically performs certain tasks like logging or notification on error, then you are going to get unintended side effects by throwing an exception when there isn't really an exception.
You are right, I am making judgement calls, based on my experiences with these types of people, both personally and on the internet. That was the whole point of my post, was to point out their elitist and extremist tendencies along with their disdain of users, instead of putting themselves in the shoes of users. It is apparent from their childish comments that they live to insult others and place themselves on a higher pedestal.
Even managers with former programming experience are terribly out of touch and would be ineffective at defining achievements at such a low level, much less writing software that would detect when the acheviement was acheved.
Sometimes algorithms have complex break conditions. You are arrogant to judge so quickly when all you have is a code snippet. I love these people who glance at some code and then say "you should refactor/redesign that" and offer no more than vague suggestions. In situations where I have the authority, I respond by assigning them the task they themselves suggested. Guess what I do when they fail at the very task they themselves so derogatorily suggested?
If it were up to these guys, every end user would be using command prompts, just so they can feel superior to their users. Having thrown usability and intuitive interfaces out the window, work would grind to a halt as everyone spends all there time deciphering half written man pages because their admin refuses to help them anymore than saying RTFM.
This sounds like a programming nightmare for an ecommerce site. Eventually we will need SDK's to manage the ever changing business rules of all the sales tax laws of all 50 states.
How did this get an insightful mod? Clearly flame bait. The commenter didn't put any emphasis on the word designed.
They were just pointing out, regardless of whether you believe in evolution or creationism, that there is likely some purpose served by the presence of a limiting hormone. Thus, by eliminating that trait, you can expect there might potentially be side effects. Of course it might be some evolutionary artifact that is no longer necessary in today's environment, but I wouldn't place bets on that.
It's like some layman who doesn't understand the purpose of a firewall going and disabling it and saying "Hey look how much faster our internet is now that this stupid firewall isn't having to inspect packets".
This is a gift horse we absolutely need to look in the mouth.
Yeh, if there is a process that has evolved/design(whatever your belief system is) to specifically limit muscle growth, then there is indeed likely a negative side effect to disabling limiting process. Perhaps animals without this regulator burned more calories and thus had to consume more food than was available to survive. Thus the mammals that developed that limiter were able to survive longer on less food. That's just one speculation, but the point is there should be alot of study into the side effects of this.
Perhaps, as you suggest, the manufacturers have realized the inaccuracy of their stated MTBF, and adjusted the warranties accordingly. Too bad they probably won't adjust the stated MTBF to be more accurate as well.
Exactly. So if the pulse hits something like a surface or fluid and some of the photons are reflected towards the camera, then it will pick those up. It can't actually see the photons that stay on their path and aren't reflected towards the camera.
"yourelf"
I have an elf?! I hope he is not like the underpants gnomes, whom cause me great frustration in the morning when getting dressed.

As a kid, that commercial really had me. When I finally tasted the stuff, I thought it was disgusting.

EF will work with other database engines if you use the correct provider.
Gah posted this as AC by mistake.
It'd be foolish to try and engineer a bit per 12 atom storage device without first demonstrating that it is actually possible to do.
It is a proof of concept and shows that trying to use 12 atoms to store a bit isn't impossible.
