Let them. Twitter is one of those social media outlets that build "networks", new users have no networks. Networks (and trust) takes time to develop. Trolls don't do these things, and when they do, they tend to expose themselves with their web of trolls. Of course, you could build automated systems to create a bunch of sockpuppet Twitter accounts ... which basically is what I see on twitter anyways.

How do you define trolling so it is differentiated from dissent?

By putting adults in charge of it, and not people who still live in Junior High (mentally).

There are people who enjoy being challenged by dissent, who can understand and differentiate between "I'm gonna Fuck your Mom" (on a political disussion), and "I'm gonna Fuck your Mom" (on a MILF thread).

The solution, which would take a great deal of time to develop, would require ongoing meta moderation of people reporting trolls. New account reporting troll would be less trusted than an established account reporting it. An account that reports everything as troll would be less trusted than someone that only reports obvious trolling.

FURTHER you could segment off troll comments so that only trolls see them and the rest of everyone else can't, so that the troll can troll themselves and legitimate comments can flourish without the assholes ruining it for everyone else.

The worst offenders end up having all sorts of conformational biases in their belief systems ("I don't know anyone who believes that way") and then use that as a feedback loop when presented someone that does challenge their beliefs ("Nobody should believe that way"), so that they moderate different views as "trollish"

Your post just reminds me of spending good money on bad ideas in the name of saving money that is never saved.

My current philosophy is to help guide people into doing things right, even if it costs a little more now, with the assumption that doing things right now, will save a lot more in the long run. Too many people are only looking at today, and cannot see tomorrow even when we show it to them.

The same as in school, except that chances are, you won't have one because there is no peer pressure to "get a Boy/Girl Friend". Yeah, you don't learn how do deal with peer pressure, but on the other hand, you don't have to deal with peer pressure at all, and it becomes ALIEN to you. My kids were home schooled, and avoided most of the socially accepted forms of peer pressure, and do not fit many social norms learned in school.

They are socially awkward simply because their adult friends still act like they are in 8th grade (because they learned how to peer pressure in school) and still try peer pressuring techniques on people who it has no effect on. Awkward!

IMHO the cause for most of 1-9 is because it is mostly LEARNED behavior. It is learned that we accept and tolerate it, which is itself an indictment of the "system" that does accept it and tolerate it at least to the degree that these people are not weeded out.

Assholes, cheaters, lazy, goof-offs etc progress because they do enough to "win" that we overlook them, and so we have to deal with them.

And there is no feedback mechanism for Taxi companies right now. NONE. This (Uber/Lyft) is a vast improvement to the current system allowing for immediate feedback on QOS. If a customer or driver is an asshole, they won't be around much, making it better for both.

I never made the claim that poor people wouldn't avoid the carbon tax. I said that they can't avoid it as well as the rich. My claims are about how "progressive" taxes aren't progressive all all, just slightly less regressive than other forms of taxes. All taxes are regressive.

My best example is the "Luxury tax" that was leveled on rich play toys like boats and airplanes during the Clinton years. What happened was, the rich stopped buying their toys and the people making these items, the hard working American workers were being laid off due to the lack of demand caused by the new tax. It was such a disaster, that it was quickly and quietly repealed.

Did the tax hurt the rich? No
Did the tax hurt middle class? Yes.

Taxes are regressive. All of them. Once you realize that, it becomes much clearer that we should find ways of avoiding them. However, liberals never met a tax they didn't like, because they like controlling others, and taxes are a form of control.

If I made a premise about pigs flying, and then gave lots of examples about how great the world would be with flying pigs, the world isn't going to be great, because pigs can't fly. Simply ignoring the reality of the situation is typical liberalism.

There is no such thing as "revenue neutral" tax plan. It isn't even possible, so everything that depends upon that being true is necessarily falsified.

Second, what is mentioned after that isn't revenue neutral at all, but yet another income redistribution tax.

Third, as we move away from Fossil Fuels to renewables, the "Tax" being levied will be reduced, and yet we'll have a growing number of people dependent upon the "tax rebate". Any attempt to lower or cutout the tax rebate program will quickly be labeled as "mean republicans throwing grandma off a cliff", thereby creating yet another deficit hole.

Fourth, all taxes are regressive. The poor guy who is paying the extra $1 gallon tax so that he can drive his loaded work truck (construction) won't be able to avoid the tax, while the wealthy person (doctor, lawyer etc) will simply buy a Tesla and avoid the taxes altogether.

Because you can't see the problems doesn't mean they don't exist.

Americans are the most generous people in the world, and are willing to help out people in need. Always have been (Damn Judeo-Christian eithic!!!) from the foundation.

To be honest, the worst thing government programs have done is create disincentives to actually going out and bettering yourself through hard work and effort. The result is that once you create a dependent person, you created a voting block to keep them dependent. This is nothing short of creating a caste/feudal system of lords and serfs.

If you're leftwing enough, you're okay with this new reality.

The whole idea of creating a system where failure is not an option, often means that success is also not an option, unless you count record numbers of people on food stamps a success. The fact that Liberals don't find that grossly insulting is also amazing. Then they doubledown on their "success".
