  1. Not False Memories on Virtual Reality Creates False Memories · · Score: 1

... except by the way that Virtual reality is "not real". However knowledge is developed internally by building up a mental model of something. This can be done through the use of a variety of modeling techniques, such as illustrations, scale mock ups (such as seen in architecture and military uses), etc. as well as VR.

Now you do have people who get into trouble by mixing reality and fantasy. Take the 4 year old who scared aware theives by surprising them in his red Power Ranger suit.

The phenomena of mixing fantasy and reality is not a problem in virtual reality. It is an error in data processing. Which bits get the reality flag attached?

It actually sounds like incomplete education. People also tend to make things up when they have a lack of data on something, and then convince themselves that 'that's the way it is'. This is also not false memory.

Maybe these shrinks should have their heads examined.

Explained Simon, "When you set out to rig an election, you want to do just enough to win. 8. Not Widely Accepted on Long-Term Wikipedia Vandalism Exposed · · Score: 1

    There are two points

I am quite sure that Wikipedia would accent an article on relativity written for them by Einstein or on Cosmology by Hawkings. So the fact of a theory article being written by the author of the theory as grounds for not being accepted is pure hogwash. Of course, I can imagine all of the first year physics student trying to correct Hawkings.

But this is typical of Wikipedia, since many political and religious beliefs, etc. are written and described by opponents and non-practitioners. Wikipedia is not the place for information about controversial subjects. Imagine a Wikipedia article on the character and morals of George Bush. 'nuff said?

The point is if the theory is accepted widely enough to merit unadulterated inclusion.

On the other hand, if the theory had been entered and written with disclaimers in front (not accepted, non-mainstream theory, at variance with mainstream research, etc) it probably would have remained. The main problem is that it did not proudly proclaim its lack of status, and it seemed vaguely reasonable to the inexpert in the field. Of course, you can still see it in the Goggle Cache for awhile.

The main problem is that personality is likely much more complex then what is proposed in the article, even if you accept the basic premise of a genetic basis for personality. The theory itself would likely be more appropriate to the early 20th century

Also there is the forthcoming YouTube AntiPiracy system. or as one wit put it: YouTube is preparing to implement new technology necessary to make it suck

A technology designed to detect copyright material could give YouTube a needed dose of legal legitimacy and calm any concerns Google Inc. has about spending $1.65 billion on the Internet video site. But that same technology could hurt YouTube's edgy appeal.

While YouTube is known as the place to find almost any kind of video clip, recent agreements with high-profile content creators require YouTube to deploy an audio-signature technology that can spot a low-quality copy of a licensed music video or other content. YouTube would have to substitute an approved version of the clip or take the material down automatically.

Analysts said that stepped-up monitoring by entertainment companies raises the likelihood that YouTube fans won't find what they're used to getting -- and will go searching for the next online video rebel. [...]

Some analysts doubt the screening technology will be foolproof. For example, detecting someone singing a copyright song on a homemade video could be difficult because the sound would not exactly match the original recording.

I was merely trying to give examples of bugs which are probably cosmetic issues (fit and finish stuff) vs those which have slightly more destructive consequences. Old slow systems would expose race condition errors that were not visible on newer systems, for example.

The example of quicktime is relevant, since early versions (say, up to about v4) would create weird crashes and conflicts under windows with some software which were not present when later versions were installed. You could go nuts trying to track the bug down and duplicate it, unless you spotted this. The correct fix was a note in the readme to have Quicktime up to date, even if the product did not use it.

Sometimes the data is new, and you will need to work it out with sufficient practice so that you can develp observation on how it actually works. Then you can put it together. Application to real world situations is useful as well.

In general, this is cause by too many processes running for the amount of ram you are running. Things like AOL have all kinds of secondary processes. A typical lean system will be running 25 to 35 processes. Some systems ship now running 70 plus processes out of the box. Also, some people run things like Norton Internet Security, or the McAfee Security Center all in paranoid mode. These can also slow a system way down. Especially if you have low ram (less than 512)

The other solution is to go out and install at least a gig more memory. Or else buy a computer that will accept and allow for more than a gig of memory as a maximum.
