The word "fanny" in the US means the same thing as "bum" in your country; it has nowhere the meaning of the word "fanny" in your country. (I learned this whilst puzzling out the commentary in British men's magazines a number of years back. It's interesting how such a big difference in meanings for the same word in two closely related languages can arise.)

My wife is from Northern Ireland. Her surname (which is a fairly popular one over there) is Bonner. But they say it as boner. Makes me giggle everytime XD

  2. WTF is cis?

  3. My point was simply that this specific example was written with Windows in mind, probably because the potential number of targets is so large.

Well, yeah. Macs were never virus proof there were just too few to bother targeting.

  5. I'm not the AC, in fact I have deliberately checked the "Post Anonymously" box to ask you : why does an opinion count only if it has a name, fake or otherwise, attached to it? If anonymous opinions don't count at all, do opinions from low-ID slashdotters count more than newer members, or are all attributed opinions equally valid? Is an opinion attributed to an obvious pseudonym less worthy than an opinion with a real name attached to it?

Because you can follow who said what. Doesn't matter if it comes from MagnoliaFan or Steven P, Jamesworth III, being able to put an opinion/statement with an entity helps give it some validity. For all anyone knows any of these conversations with AC after AC after AC could be the same person posting again and again, two people in conversation, three or more. It's too hard to follow and give any weight to because it could be anyone saying anything.

It "matters", but Slashdot should not be the venue to discuss it!

I worked on software that (I didn't know at the time) was sold to the NSA for use in spying on American citizens. The whole war on terror stuff may seem generalist and largely theoretical to you, but it sure as hell isn't to me.

I hope that you have a long and fulfilling career where you never do something that later turns your stomach and makes you question everything. Just be aware that not everyone here is that lucky.

C'mon, if your gunna go AC/Tor at least give up some juicy details!

In the UK, music publishers got a ruling that ripping CDs is illegal. What is the likely outcome of that?

Oh shit, really? I did my whole collection. That's like 3400 songs off ~300 albums. Am I fucked? I hear sirens, they'll never take me alive and all that.

In all seriousness though I got to a point in my life, kinda mid university, that I just got bored of new music. None of the new bands really interested me and most of the bands I do like, their latest cds were shit. I have literally no desire for any music streaming service as I already have all the music I want/need. All I really wanted back then was a phone that could actually double as an mp3 player with enough storage and well, I've been taken care of in that regards for years now.

This has been bothering me for a while, but why do people talk about Spotify like it solves a problem? It might be the genre of music I like, but when I look at what Spotify offers, I don't see how it's superior to Google Play Music (where I can upload 50,000 hourlong tracks and listen on 10 authorized devices, where Spotify only allows 3333 tracks and 3 devices) and see a streaming catalog that with poorly cataloged , mislabeled or missing content.

I like classical music, something that no streaming service handles well, but Google Music is free if you're just uploading stuff you already have. What's Spotify doing to make itself better than that?

I don't think people are referring to spotify specifically. It's just becoming the go to word for music streaming service, like google is for search engines, netflix for vid streaming, hoover for vacuum cleaners etc etc

not really the best parallel. Perhaps more like "it's hard to find a car with all the features I want. I'll build my own and not bother to get it inspected or registered."

Nah that'd be closer to I cant get the music I want so I'll write my own.

It would be unwise to write them off. They have more cash than imaginable, and when they secrecy around the iCar is taken off, they with Tesla will attempt to validate the driverless electric market.

They have quite a few years before they can sell driverless cars or they are even on the market. In the mean time I guess the best they could do would attach their name to someone elses. Do apple still use google maps or did they sort their own out or anything else they can use to add value other than their logo? I do I appreciate they have a few metric fuck tons of cash but a good way to piss that away would to design, build and market a car with all associated costs.

I had a free-for-life email account which I used to forward mail to my current ISP. That lasted about a year then it became a yearly subscription. This change happened before the company failed or was bought out. It was a small subscription though, $24/year so I kept it to avoid changing my email every time I got a new ISP or having to get a really dumb email name like darinbob3312@cheapassnet.net. So it's worth it I guess, but I was really annoyed when the change happened. They probably knew their customers would find it more frustrating to leave than to stay. (I was in the minority though, most of the customers used it was web mail instead of just forwarding email)

I got a free email address about 15+ years ago and it's still free. hotmail FTW.
