  1. Today on NBC... on Publishers vs. Libraries · · Score: 1

a story of how Federal Agents had to restrain protesters from outside a library because patrons were "allowed to borrow books" and "read books they had not bought". Up next, Fred talks to the owners of Blockbuster and their experience with protestors who thought it was wrong to rent movies...

I'd second a vote for Paypal - they have very low fee rates, and thei privacy policy seemed to be pretty good too. And no silly patents ;-)

  3. Just give it a try on How Can New Programmers Contribute to Open Source? · · Score: 2

The best thing to do IMHO is pick which language you are most confident with, find a small app written in that language which interests you, and see if you can understand the code. If you can, see if there are any features you could add on. If you can't understand the code, look for something else, or try a different language.

And yes, the best way is to just jump in, heck this is the Internet, it's not like you have to walk up to a crowded room where the average IQ is over 200 and introduce yourself..

Remember their wonderful marketting camplain a while ago with the slogan "Guiness is good for you?" Ripe for perversion.

  5. Fire the HR people, hire more techs on H1B Tech Visa Workers Being Deported From U.S. · · Score: 1

What I've noticed, and this is something that certain family members have dealt with in the past, is that techs get a rough time at the hands of HR people. It tends to be left to the HR dept who gets hired and how much they get paid. The dept doing the actual hiring usually have some input, though they should have more. How many interviews have you gone to where the HR person haras^H^H^H^H^Hinterviewing you pleaded ignorance of what the job actually entailed? Fire the HR dweebs and hire the techs, I say!
