  1. Re:Pure Xenophobia on AFL-CIO Proposed Reforms for the H1B Program · · Score: 2

The problem is not xenophobia. It's unions. Unions exist slowly to cater to the lazy worker. The one who doesn't want to do more than he has to to get by.

If the AFL-CIO had it's way, I would be out of work. Why? Because I wouldn't be able to wear many hats. I wouldn't be able to do more than was explicitly set down in my job description.

If I needed a piece of patch cable, I couldn't make it myself. That would be up to the cable guy.

Unions MIGHT have been a good idea back in the day. Nowadays they exist purely to make money for the shop stewards and up. Look at UAL. The head of the mechanics union said he would rather see UAL go bankrupt than work with the company to help them through the financial problems.

I can't understand why ANY tech worker would be a member of a union. It runs contrary to the achievement mentality of the average geek. The attitude of bettering yourself personally and professionally.

I'm not a fan of the H1B program but did anyone ever stop to think that maybe salaries are FINALLY coming in line with market conditions? I personally think the quality of work that we've dealt with coming out of overseas tech markets has been less than stellar. Eventually the companies that continue to produce shitty product/service will realize that cost isn't everything and quality will take a front seat again. It's been going this way for years.

Actually I would LOVE to have everything accessable in a database somehow. I've been wondering about something using the userfs stuff. Not really mounting a mysql database as a usermode filesystem but having information from the system available that way.

I've found myself many times wishing I could just type "select location, filename from datastore where contents like %resume%"

SQL comes much more naturally to me than the find command does. I would love an easier way to index the contents of everyfile on my system by an arbitrary number of metadata and then have that accessable via a simple sql statement.

I remember Scott Hacker did something similar with BeFS and his webserver at somepoint but he's long gone as is BeOS.

Am I the only one that this makes sense to?

I still haven't bought an HDTV yet (I'm cheap. I'll wait for the early adopters to help drive the cost down) but I'll get one eventually. Probably before the end of this year.

"Cell phone portability stays alive - July 18, 2002
If you are one of our listeners who took the time to write to the FCC about the cell phone industry, Clark wants to congratulate you. A law passed in 1996 allowed you to take your cell phone number from company to company if you changed providers. It was called "true number portability" and the cell phone industry was terrified of it. So, they have tried everything they could to postpone the law going into effect. The FCC asked for you comments in this matter and your voice was heard. The FCC has issued a decision, saying the rule will stay in effect and you'll be able to keep your number. But reinstatement will not go into effect until Thanksgiving 2003. So, we will be able to take our number with us, but not for a while. And, when this goes into effect, many cell phone companies will go away because of mergers. As long as we have four major players, we will have a decent amount of competition."

    3) Lemme guess? Drugs == bad! Guns == bad! Forget the fact that the 2nd ammendment provides for the personal ownership of firearms for all citizens, (already ruled on by the Supreme Court). Forget the fact that the two countries you mentioned have drug laws that create the crime associated with drugs. Treatment is cheaper than enforcement (ask Holland). Just because one is used in the commission of a crime for the other does not tie the two together in anything permanent. Forks and spoons could have easily been used in a drug related crime.

    4) Yeah and while you're at it, ask Gray Davis why he chose the most expensive power company contact over more cost effective ones.

    4) I would gather that they would not bow to federal pressure for higher age drinking laws just to get money for interstates.

Look, the only problem I see with this is the way many of the ideas are worded. That and the fact that the average stupid person will believe the other two parties bullshit about this concept.

I applaud the effort. They are doing exactly what the founding fathers had in mind. Exercising states rights. Any right NOT enumerated to the federal government is left up to the states to decide. This was a KEY principle. It's easier to move to another state than it is to change your citizenship. They are effecting change in the best way possible allthough I think a more concerted effort across all states would fare better.

Oh yeah, sorry about the stupid prat comment. I get so fed up with bullshit "think about the children, guns are bad, drugs are bad" rhetoric that I fly off the handle.
