I can imagine pretty much any strange device would would (probably/dev/null too). I guess, in both cases (windows and linux), it causes strange responses in the browser from looking at a device instead of a file (since \con\con is just the dos equivalant of/dev/console). This would freak out software (ie Netscape) out that isn't designed to handle it. -legolas

hmph... the Oxford English Dictionary, unfortunately, costs money (for their website), but according to www.dictionary.com, Darwinism is...
Darwinism (därw-nzm) n.
A theory of biological evolution developed by Charles Darwin and others, stating that all species of organisms arise and develop through the natural selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual's ability to compete, survive, and reproduce. Also called Darwinian theory.
So, by that theroy, any variations that would decrease an individual's (or, as is often discussed on slashdot, a business') abilitity to compete, survive, and reproduce (eg being stupid) would cause the individual to die off, since that is an undesirable trait that has a detremental effect to the species.

While it hasn't been released, many people have already deduced the protocol. Personally, I use Licq on my Linux box, and IHMO, it is a lot better then Mirabilis' software. (it does skinning, has a nice interface, has a console interface, etc.) -legolas

iBooks work great under Linux. The only real problem is that the support is still experimental (so, for example, there is no sound yet). However, i work on it daily, and it's great. =^). Both LinuxPPC and Yellow Dog Linux installed on it great the first time.
We use USB mice on it all the time (since USB is the only external interface on it). It recognises them no problem. Also, while there isn't any real APM yet, you can check the battery level with a Gnome panel app. -legolas

The American designation is the Cessna O1. Cessna 305 is the civilian designation.
The "O" is for observation, as it was used to fly really low to the jungle (and has a huge engine, so it can climb really quick... which is why it's used to tow gliders) -legolas

Actually, the aircraft was a brand new Boeing 767. This occured on Saturday, July 23rd, 1983. At the time, Canada was still in the growing pains of converting over to the metric system, which caused the slipup.
The aircraft was a glass cockpit, and was only able to get back electric power after an emergency power turbine was deployed (such things actually exist in most aircraft, often integrated into an engine turbine).
If anybody wants to hear the whole story about this (a very good read, actually), the story was told in a book entitled Freefall by Tom Read. It was also made into a made-for-tv movie entitled Falling from the sky. -legolas
i've looked at love from both sides now. from win and lose, and still somehow...
Hmph... one should also keep in mind the lifespan of aircraft. I recently got my private pilots licence in Canada (an expensive hobby, but worth it, IMHO), and I did my training on a 1969 Cessna 172. When I got my Glider Pilots Licence the year before, I used gliders built in the 1970s and was towed by aircraft used for napalm bombing in the Korean War (1953 Cessna 305 aka L-10 Bird dog... the US used a different designation. Very cool plane... it still has the trigger on the stick). There are even airliners in use in the world that were built in the 1970s. (L-1011, old 747s, etc.) And, these are planes that are used daily. Unlike cars, they can last so long because they are well made (which is why a brand new Cessna 172 costs $150k+) and well maintained. At our local flying club, the aircraft undergo inspections of varying intensity (as required by law) after every 100h of usage.
My point is that, at the time they were built, there was no idea that EMF could be a problem. I mean, even the radio navigation system we have in place today (and the reason you can't use electronic devices during takeoff and landing) wasn't conceived until long after many of these planes were built. At the time, most of your navigation would be by maps or, at most, very non-sensitive navigation devices (ADF, etc.). Instrument landing and the percise navigation devices required to work around JFK in the states, or even Person International in Toronto couldn't have been taken into consideration with the building of the plane.
Hmph... additionally, cellphones are bad for use on airplanes for another reason too. At higher altitudes, you can get direct line-of-sight contact with many towers at the same time, which messes with the system emmensly (which is why it is outlawed, afaik, by both Canadian and American (FCC) authorities.

Hehe... trust me, i'm running a G3 (iBook) with Linux right now, and the G4/Linux combination is what you want. Imagine running Linux on one of these puppies... =^D
Okie, seriously, tho, i have two points. First, after using Apple's hardware, and comparing it with Intel's (we run multiple iBooks/iMacs at my work, as well as a PIII 500, all running Linux), I must say that Apple puts out pretty impressive hardware for a reasonable price (my iBook laptop is worth only $2500 CDN, and yet runs quite impressively fast under Linux).
Second, keep in mind that MacOS X is designed as a replacement for MacOS, not Linux. While it is based on a BSD kernel, OS X is built around the Aqua/Cocoa/Carbon layers. So, while it will run stablier and much better multitasking (*shudders at OS 9*), it's still designed as a MacOS, being easy to use and hiding the hard stuff from the user (although, yes, a shell is now finally possible - i've played with the OS X preview releases). So, pretty much, Linux (or another *nix) would still be the better choice if you are like me and want to control the inter workings of everything, and the apple hardware is the way to go (although get a mouse replacement... X with a single button mouse is no fun)
That's how I see it, at least, from experience. -legolas

Well, i've given BeOS a whirl... while I personally would rather stick with Linux or perhaps some BSD-like *nix, I am sure a novice wouldn't have too much trouble with it. It seems to have a reasonable interface, configures itself easily (assuming you have compatible hardware), and you've gotta love how quickly it boots! -legolas

Hehe... well, i'll agree with you - there is no way in hell i'd pay $120.00 for a pair of shoes, unless they were something really amazing. That's why i've owned a wide variety of brands, and I never pay full price (can you say sale/end-of-line?;^) As a matter of fact, I'm wearing non-brand name hiking boots right now, which are great.
My point was this, though. Often brand names become popular because of the commitment to quality of the producer. I would never buy $200 Tommy jeans just because of the brand, but on the other hand, I paid extra to get a Sony Sports Discman as opposed to some no-name (and thus cheaper in both senses of the word) player, simply because I know I'm buying quality. Same deal when I buy brand-name shoes. If the brand burns me, then I never buy from them again. Isn't the free market economy loverly? =^)

I mean, seriously... how many people will defend Linux over FreeBSD, even though, essentially, they are the same thing? (Especially since some of them haven't even tried FreeBSD, or Plan 9, or BeOS, etc. etc... they are just addicted to the image)

Hmph... for those who are interested, in Halifax, NS, Canada, we have two local phone providers. The interesting thing is that the new one doesn't provide over POTS at all... but coax! That's right... the cable company, Eastlink (who also does our cable modems) are also doing phone services. You keep your existing internal wiring, as well as your phone number. Additionally, there is talk that our phone company, MTT is going to deliver cable over DSL, and the power company Nova Scotia Power, has fiber all over the place and is thinking of going into the market too. And, of course, we have three cellphone providers. Very interesting, since we have a very small population. (and relitively good for the end user, since bandwidth is insainly cheap here.) It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
We are also taking steps towards banning pesticides and making Scent-Free law. *heavy sigh* -legolas

Hmph... assuming this ISP was dialup (or even some DSL like mine), couldn't you just disconnect, reconnect (getting a new IP) and not go to the chat room again?
Additionally, the ISP should either have the bandwidth to handle a DOS attack like that, or the facilities on their router to block it out. If not, you should definately consider a better isp. -legolas

Actually, according to the official Sealand Government website, they were attacked in 1978 by some Dutch men employed by a German businessman. Prince Roy's son Michael was kidnapped. Soon after, the island was retaken and some of the original attackers were held as POWs (although soon released under the terms of the Geneva Convention). It is also said that this same German businessman started all the fake Sealand passports in cirulation, which outnumber the authentic ones by 500 to one. -legolas
