I see your point, but one of the features I currently like about linux is the flexability to run on 386's all the way up to high end hardware. I currently use linux on a wide range of systems, all the way from 386's to alphas. Having a common system and reasonable preformance on all of these systems really is one of the primary benefits of linux, at least to me.
