  1. Re:this brings up a philosophical point on Zhang Fei Temple Digitally Remastered · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think you are confusing a range of issues here.

Before I begin, let me state that I am fundamentally opposed to the Three Gorges project!

Firstly, their human rights record is atrocious, but that has nothing to do with the Three Gorges Project per se, and I don't understand why you mention it in this context (it may also pay to note that the USA executed 85 people in 2000, so its hands are hardly clean (I realise this is far below the scale of China))

Secondly, Large damming projects have often involved moving sections of the population. This is not unique to the Three Gorges Project. in that light, the archaeological treasures (i.e. things not readily moveable) need to have a high priority placed on them (not to the exclusion of the currently living human population). What hasn't been said is what compensation the Chinese government is making to the people it is moving. Without this information, it is hard to say whether they are being unreasonable or not.

thirdly, to say China cares more about tourisim than its billions [sic, its about 1.3 billion] of people is a little odd. Tourism is a revenue generating process (typically FOR the people). Surely by promoting tourism (ideally in a slightly more eco-friendly way than Three Gorges) they are demonstrating that they care for the economic well being of the local people?

  2. Bounded Space on Let's Kill the Hard Disk Icon · · Score: 1

It seems to me that the main point being made about a desktop vs directories is that a desktop has a geographically bounded space, and hence a limited number of items that can be usefully placed upon it.

Surely, apart from the geographically 'bounded nature' of a desktop, there is no real difference between a desktop and a directory that had an artificial limit on the number of files that can be placed in it? I mean, they talk about the concept of nested desktops (i.e. sub-desktops = sub-directories).

The question that I raise out of this is...
Do people find value in the geographic placement of items on a desktop vs the logical ordering of items in a directory?

  3. Component Libraries on Interbase And Kylix Details From Borland/Inprise Con · · Score: 1

As a delphi developer, it seems crazy to me that so many people are missing a major issue that will strike when Kylix is first released (it will be a temporary situation, but until resolved will hamstring development efforts in Kylix) That is, the lack of 3rd party components. For example, the company I work for has 3rd party components for a treeview, oracle access, serial port access, reporting, etc etc. Now a number of these make use of windows API calls, or DLL calls (eg to Oracle) that will take quite some effort to port across. So, I guess what I am saying is don't view Kylix as the holy grail to getting Win developers onto Linux - view it as a first step that may eventuate into the holy grail once the component lib's are there. Why do we need to kick start civilisation? Humanity managed to sort out civilisation (assuming we are civilised, there are plenty of good arguments and examples to say that we aren't) without any form of kickstart You also seem to assume that whoever/whatever was to replace us in the event of a Life Extinction Event would be of hominoid, or at least hominid origins. I would suggest that the odds of this are fair, but not great. Cheers Hacman
