I guess it all depends on your basic philosophy. If you're a "turn-the-other-cheek" kinda guy, you're absolutely right. There are those, however, with an attitude more like, "Don't start a fight, and don't walk away from one."
In the case mentioned, I saw it more like self-defense, than an outright attack.
In some bizarre circumstances, such as mine, I'd get one. My company is run by a bunch of Old Farts who expect us to be available on call, but won't pick up the tab for pagers or cellphones. If this thing works in my area, I'm getting one. ----------
This was a very good piece. All around. Good work, Jon.
I have to admit that until now, I'd pretty much been ignoring your articles. I read this one purely by chance. FWIW, you're back on my reading list.
I hope the Pinkertons are really misguided, but well-intentioned. If so, they might become enlightened. Unfortunately, I think they're probably greedy and exploitive. How can you not see the dangers in this sort of system?
Come on, isn't that stretching it just a bit? The point is that it's a parody. Even if not, it's not exactly the same as Microsoft's slogan. No, M$ is just trying to throw its weight around. ----------
Leatherman Super Tool Nokia GSM phone (voice mail, email, and pager) Pilot 5000 upgraded to Palm III The Leatherman tools are the most essential tools for a geek. I can also receive faxes on my GSM phone, and relay them to the closest fax machine. This way, I only have to give out one telephone number. This phone is also my home telephone. The landline is for a modem. But, since I'm hardly ever at home, the GSM phone does everything for me. I've had my Pilot since it was a 512KB device. I've since ugpraded it to a Palm III and started using the ``pilot-link'' package for Linux. I copy man pages and articles to read in my copious (?!) free time. ----------
Maybe. There wasn't a Palm II, was there. And they're jumping from V to VII.

I still use my old Pilot 5000. Never upgraded, but it's been a drag with so little memory. I like the Palm III, but agree that the V doesn't look like much of an upgrade over the III.
Here in Honolulu (where everything is overpriced, I found that Palm IIIs go for $299. While looking over the goods at the local CompUSA, I noticed that the PalmPilot Pro goes for $199, and the upgrade to a Palm III is $79. Heh. ----------
There is a GSM version of the StarTAC, but it can't use the clip-on organizer.

Uh, don't use their lame software? Vote with your wallet?

Yikes! Why not just tattoo a MICROS~1 logo on your forehead?
----------
How about: ``Do you wish to reboot your system?''
