In the past, I've had weird RPM problems with RH's Kernel updates. I am glad they didn't release an actual kernel RPM because they usually botch it up. Or at least the initscripts*.RPM.

I don't mind compiling the kernel, but I'd like to know if anyone tried these RPM's on 5.2 and if they seemed to work well.

The only gripe I have with RH's RPM's is when they prepare them like they did with the Window Maker RPM on their 5.2 CDROM. I've been running Window Maker for a long time and I personally like to put it in the /usr/local location. RH however, likes to integrate it into their /usr partition. They also integrated their FVWM menu structure into it. This is kinda nice, but also a pain if you want to edit the menu. WM has a nice WMPrefs app that allows you to easily configure the menu.

Basically, if you install the RH WM RPM, then you can't easily upgrade it unless you get an RPM. The WM tarball is easy to install and includes a simple script to do it. It defaults to the proper /usr/local location. I prefer /usr/local for all add-on systems for several reasons. One, I like to keep a base /usr partition that isn't too big. 2. I like to isolate stuff I added later on in /usr/local. RH also doesn't put the /usr/local in the path like it should either.

I don't mind tweaking my RH 5.2 system to make up for these minor oversites, but I think they should be addressed by the RH team.

I like the concept of RPM's but I find myself downloading source, compiling it and creating my own RPM's just so things get placed where they are supposed to reside.

If we could just all agree on a standard directory structure that keeps the base OS away from additional programs, I would be happy. I don't want what happened in the world of Winblows to happen to Linux. I hate it when installations, install to strange places and overwrite files I don't want overwritten. RPM's at least let me see what it's going to do...

I run NT at work with over 50 software applications, many of which use ODBC. Every time some new ODBC application is installed, it messes up the rest of the ODBC applications. This is because the developers don't follow any basic rules when installing their ODBC. They don't check to see if ODBC exists already, they don't put files in the right locations, and they don't install ODBC if it isn't there already.

I've had to trouble-shoot Linux library problems, like QT libraries, etc. and I never had as many problems as I do with ODBC under Win95/98/NT. To fix the ODBC problems, I've got to start with a reliable build image (NT w/apps). Take a snapshot of the registry, copy the ODBC* files to a backup location. Install the offending application, then figure out what the heck it did wrong and correct it. SYBASE, ORACLE, MS-SQL, and MS-Office applications are a real pain in the neck if you run several of them on the same NT box.

Please don't let this happen to Linux! As we make things easier for the end users (and I think RPMS are a good step in that direction), then let's put some thought into what we do. The newer RPM GUI tools look very promising. I need to easily see dependencies and exactly what an RPM is going to do.

If we can't make it idiot proof, we should at least have it provide as much detailed information to the system admin as possible. This is simply not done in WinBlows, everything is hidden and not easily discovered.

Kudo's to the RPM designers for a well thought out installer and maintainer. Anyone want to port it to NT? An open source RPM system for Win95/98/NT with a decent GUI would make my day. I am sick of INSTALLSHIELD, WINSTALL, SMS, KIX32, and REXX.

The PalmIII added IR, which allows Palm owners to share information. This enables Palm owners to share information easily. This makes it easy to exchange notes, contact information, appointments, etc. Any environment with a large number of PalmIII users will see huge advantages from this feature.

The PalmIII also improved the formfactor, which, I have argued elsewhere, is an very important part of the Palms feature set. The easier the device is to carry the more likely you are to carry it and the more useful it will be to you. Similarly if it is easier to hold you will use it more and longer.

Granted, neither of these was enough reason for me to upgrade from a Pro.

The PalmV, on the other hand, may just do it. More compact than a PalmIII while including IR support and an improved screen. I have already explained the size advantage. The improved screen will make it easier to read the display which will make quick accesses even quicker and long accesses much less painful. I have read news & things on my Pro and while I find it treamendously useful to have such a compact, portable and up to date information source, it can cause horrible eyestrain under all but the best lighting conditions. (the rechargable battery should also be useful although its biggest benifit is in enabling a more compact form factor.)

I should also note that there is expected to be a Palm IV, or somesuch, which will improve upon the III with more memory and an expansion slot. This will enable larger custom applications on the platform which can be quite useful in verticle markets.

After that is the Wireless Palm, which I agree, will be a big step up, but it will also be expensive. However, having a vast network of information at your hip will be tremendously useful.

Color, on the other hand, just seems like a gee-whiz feature. I would like to see it in the future, and I think it will help expand the market for the platform, but it will add expense and decreace battery life which will, in turn, decrease the devices general utility. But why no CompactFlash adapter?!? It'd fit with the size, it'd allow infinite (or near such!) expandability (heaven forfend the IBM CF-II drives at 360MB in a Pilot...!), and it's Just Good Tech!

In any case, the ONLY reason I'd consider getting a new Pilot is the IR capabilities, but I just don't see another $300 worth of capability in any of these 'upgrades'.

Pity. Maybe if someone ported Linux to the WinCE machines they'd be usable. THAT would be a blast! In the mean time, I'm over 4MB used in my Pilot, not including the extra MB stored in my Flash. If the new Pilots don't support the TRG memory cards then it's going to have to be one heck of an incredible upgrade. (Color, CF-II, IR, and thin together might just do it though...)

If you're not a pilot owner yet, though, these new models are SWEET, and I do highly recommend them. (I admit, I only wish I'd gotten the black IBM Palm Pro. For pure style reasons...)
