  1. What about GRAVITY?!?! on NASA Prototype: Could It Make Mars Breathable? · · Score: 1

Isn't Mars just a bit larger that our Earth? What will we do about that? Maybe we can hollow out the planet core so that there will be an equivalent mass as that of Earth -or how about a "gravity simulation machine" like in all the movies that show spaceships in outerspace still with gravity onboard!

  2. what I mean is... on Super-Fast Hard Drives · · Score: 1

even with large amounts of RAM, NT still manages to begin pagefiling -no matter how much memory you have. I can't understand why this is. I can understand the need to have a reserve ability to offload memory if you run out of physical memory but why does NT do that even you aren't running out?

  3. What's the big deal? on Super-Fast Hard Drives · · Score: 2

People have been making virtual drives for years now. The only problem is that mobo makers don't create systems with that many DIMM slots (for obvious profiting reasons). What I don't understand is why we even bother with virtual memory at all. If you can afford to run a huge amount of RAM on your system, and never even come close to using all of it, why not disable using VM at all? Is there something I'm missing here?

Seriously, the present hard drive media has to go. It's the bottleneck of the entire system -and one of the few remaining moving parts in a computer. I'm looking foreward to the day when it's all solid-state.

I've used StarOffice in both LINUX and Windows NT4 without a hitch. I love the interface and the fact that I don't have to "import/export" MS office documents. I have only experienced a few MS documents that StarOffice wouldn't open properly. The problem documents contained special routines and features not commonly found in a Word document.

You make excellent point and a few things I'd never thought of before but the fact remains that I'm pretty much able to read most any MS office document that comes my way in StarOffice --for free!

  7. NT4, W98, Win2K already do this!!! on The Ultimate Flat Panel Monitor Solution · · Score: 1

Please. I use dual 17's in NT with my Imagine128 cards (two of them). Matrox has done the same thing with their Millenium series (G100, G200, G400, ect.). In fact, W98 and Win2K go even further: with a fairly late model video card and at least a W98 driver, you can add as many video cards and monitors as you have PCI slots open for. The size of each monitor, the resolution settings, frequencies, ect can all be set differently for each card. You can also tile the monitors any way you like -not just side-by-side. There is nothing new here except a nifty rack system to hold the panels. This site is for nothing more than the brain-dead corporate managers that don't know any better and don't have any competent staff to tell them otherwise.

  8. Biology does much more with much less... on Ask Slashdot: Storage Capacity of the Human Brain? · · Score: 1

Look at the brain of an ant. It has about a dozen nurons or equivalent transistors and yet look at it walking and communicating and thinking. Do we have a robot that can think that way with so little computing power? In addition, think of how many nurons we have damaged in our life and just move on. How stable are our computers of today? could they stand to lose a handfull of transistors in their processors or RAM chips or HDD sectors and operate without problems? I think not.

The fact is that we have a long way to go before we even compare to the brains of simple bugs that dig in the dirt of our lawns. They are simpler, more robust, and do more with less.

  9. Edwards AFB can say "Thanks" too!!! on Another Windows Macro Virus Wreaks Havoc · · Score: 1

This afternoon here at the helpdesk of Edwards Air Force Base, the phones and radios were booming with distress from this slick virus. We were there late running through all our buildings checking systems and either telling them they were ok or having the burden of informing them that their Office documents may be gone.

I think it is a good wake up call for the base here too. Many users are told over and over to back up their critical data and they never get it. We have users that keep all their important documents within their email client! We have many users that look at their hard drive as invincible and unfailing. I can't think of how much data I have seen lost from careless handling by users.

In addition, the US military decided last year to standardize on MS Exchange/Outlook as their world-wide email system. We had just finnished standardizing the base to Groupwise when the decision was made. I can understand the need for standards but why such a BAD standard? Even the cheezy magizines that blantantly schmooze Microsoft products will admit that Groupwise is a better product -not that that would have prevented this problem. I think this whole incident will force users and managers to think a lot differently about their data the the handling of it.

  10. won't happen -not with Autodesk! on Pro/Engineer for Linux Poll · · Score: 1

I had quite an ongoing talk with some of the major exec's at Autodesk last year about this very issue. AD is pretty ignorant about LINUX (in management circles) and looks at UNIX as a dying OS and doesn't want to spend any more development $$ in it. The sad fact is that AD is getting big and fat and slow so don't expect any major innovation to come out of them! I personally love their suite of software but I hate their management (actually I hate ALL management). As I stated in my last talk with them, "Someone is going to port to LINUX. I just wish it was you." I hate to say it but you might as well forget about AD and their software products. There are already some excellent platforms for CAD and 3D animantion in LINUX. VariCAD has been working in the business longer than AD and Blender is a free 3D animation/modeller package that, in some ways, puts 3DS MAX to shame!

  12. My thoughts on Voices From The Hellmouth · · Score: 1

Jon, great article. I haven't thought too much about my high school life in over 10 years. I now have a wife and a life and am thinking about children. I have changed a lot since then and have a pretty good future ahead of me in my career. With that said...High school was by far the most hellish and difficult time for me. I watched the jocks and the women that followed them around -the women I could admire but never have. I saw the popularity of the conformists with a deep longing inside. But I had several things going for me in my corner.

    1) I had a family that was close to me. Almost everyday of my high school years I spent the last hour of the day in the kitchen talking with mom about our day. We shared about everything -both ways. That helped a lot.

    2) I found things to do myself (I learned the piano, did the Boy Scout thing, studied Tae Kwon Do, ect.) that I could feel good about and gave me confidence. I could do things that know one else could and I could do them well.

    3) I had some understanding of God -not nearly what I know or understand now but it was a beginning.

Even with all that, high school was pretty hellish. I will say several things to those of you still on that tough journey:

It WILL get better. College is an improvement and the work place is even better. Make a few friends (that won't teach you how to make bombs) and keep them. Realize that all those jocks will either become pro-athletes (very few) of wind up at the local shoe store. All that was cool in high school means nothing outside of it! I'm glad I actually learned math there instead of just how to play sports.

And to all you gun-banning freaks: Wake up!!!!! It has never been harder for anyone to get a gun in the US than it ever has. Up 'till the late 60's you could order a gun through the mail. Kids weren't shooting each other then...

If you want to feel even better that a jock on prom night, do the following:

    1) Get a BS (and I do mean BullShit but get one) degree in something.

    2) Get a good job that makes you happy.

    3) Learn about God.

    4) Find a good woman and marry her.

    5) Have all the sex you want!!! When you are feeling rejected by the world, go home and have sex with your wife. All those years of muck will have been worth it -trust me.
