Because otherwise it is just moderation of their support boards. People who are having problems don't need to be reminded they are having problems, they need to find fixes for them. Would people be in the same ferver if someone got a "Windows is better" post deleted from a Linux support board? Reactionary dribble. Everyone seems to be wanting to make Apple into the sith empire.

  3. Standards on How To Use HTML5 Today · · Score: 2, Interesting

HTML is not a finished standard. Should this prevent people from starting to use it? No, in fact, hell no, we should start using it right now to increase the uptake and motivate the developments of better technologies for utilizing it. A trial by fire will by itself weed out the un-needed portions of HTML 5 and perhaps show the usefulness of features that would otherwise be left out. Should IE's abysmal standards compliance prevent you from writing properly formated code? No, again, you should always motivate the use of new web technologies for helping to implement an advanced and open web.

  4. Reactionary past the History lesson. on The End of Free · · Score: 1

I enjoyed the lead-in to the article, some interesting tidbits here and there, but beyond that it just started degrading into something tantamount to FUD. Claiming the end of the open web when in fact, the things that they tout as replacing it are products of the open mentality. Public APIs to otherwise closed systems (Facebook, Twitter) allow a degree of choice when selecting your preferred interface and allow easy scripting to retrieve that information and freely use it in scripts, bots, and other such projects. Interoperability is a large part of "free information" and we are seeing more and more of that. If anything we are seeing a revival of the open web, making free culture mainstream. I have nothing but hope for the future of the web, and I know it will be open and free.

People seem to forget these two companies actually press open standards above proprietary formats. For two companies that are pitted against each other so much by the media and marketing, they really do remain nearly seamlessly interoperable. I have no problems switching between Apple's default software to alternative applications just because of how standardized it is. Mail, iCal, etc.

  9. Will this promote tech waste? on Bluetooth 4.0 Spec Adopted · · Score: 3, Interesting

Do you think people will just throw away most of the little bluetooth devices that use this new low power spec when the battery runs out rather then going out to replace the batteries, as is so often the case with small consumer electronics like cheep watches? Maybe this will promote planned obsolescence in those sort of accessory devices.

Great idea, in theory. I foresee abuse, trolling, duplicate posts and spammers making it an unintelligible and useless database for public opinion, but maybe it will at least highlight a few laws to be looked at and refined. I don't personally believe these sort of ventures stand much ground without some serious work being dedicated to dig out the gems of relevance within the tides of pure crap. The interent is a powerful tool, but having access to unlimited and unmediated information is not always the best thing possible when you need specific ideas. Then again, i've always been a 'pessimist'. We'll see how this works out, i hope it really makes a difference.
