  1. Re:Screen Suburbs on GNOME 3.8 Released Featuring New "Classic" Mode · · Score: 1

Because the Gnome icons in the Gnome3 toolbar would still need to be there. So I would not get rid of the top toolbar. So then I would be stuck with two panels eating screen estate.

And I'm sure it would take one of the Gnome programmers only a few minutes to enable the toolbars to be vertical. So why can't they allow it?

In the end it was much easier for me to start using KDE.

But the real problem I think is mentality. Gnome removing features from gnome2 to gnome3 just because they decided we did not need them. It's like if some cable provider decided that colour is just a gimmick and started sending everything in black & white. Or some computer company deciding we only need one button on the computer mice. Some people just love to dictate how others should live.

The quality of the screen is super. It's the size I do not like. Lower but wider than earlier. Since I work with text I can se fewer lines of the documents/sources I work on. And that stinks. A higher resolution does not help since I want a certain font size regardless of resolution. This is what happens when products are developed by economists and not engineers and usability specialists.

Can I have my vertical panels in this new "classic" mode? This is the single item that eventually had me removing gnome and installing kde. With the low but wide screens on todays computers it's silly to remove even more workspace by having top and bottom panels. Have them vertically on the left or right sides! Plenty of unused space out there in the suburbs. I need my many lines of source code or document text. Don't steel my height!

I have had my w530 for almost a year. Still hate the keyboard. Still hate the missing LEDs (is it charging or not?). Still hate the low but wide screen - even lower than my T61 which I also thought was too low when I got it. Not to fond of the huge power-brick either but can understand that one. But the other issues? No. This is my last Thinkpad and I'm really looking forward to getting rid of it. Please, boss? Pretty please?

This is so true. My W530 was bought witout checking too much since you cannot go wrong when you buy an expensive Thinkpad, right? Not so! The terrible new keyboard layout that I still havent adjusted to after 9 months of use. The low screens taking an inch or so of my source code when I program. I never use this for movies so why the wide and low screen? Also most of the status lights have been removed. I cannot any longer see when my laptop is charging! And therefore it has turned itself off on me on several occasions. You have to be logged on to see the icon and get warnings.

So this is my last Thinkpad! I just hope someone else see the possibilities here and start making a real programmers laptop like the thinkpads used to be!

After All These Years. Still impossible to move the status bars to the side (vertically). And that was the feature that made me drop Gnome after beeing a happy user for years. I even used to ridicule KDE users. But now I'm on KDE too. And don't tell me my gripes can be fixed with extensions - no extension will give me vertical status- and tool bars. It's sad watching someone you love sink m'ore and more into the quagmire every time they move. But they won't listen and be rescued. It's like a Greek Tragedy in six acts.

First of all the new chicklet keyboard design make me hit the wrong keys all the time. Especially the delete key! And this after two months of trying to get used to it. Then they have removed the status lights for such things as caps lock and battery vs charging.

And the screen is 1 cm lower than my old T61 - which was 1 or 2 cm lower than my older 4:3 laptop. Each new machine give me fever lines of code to work with. I am not a happy customer any more. My productivity has taken a hit and my boss won't like that.

Why force the user to use an inch of the height of the already too low 16:9 screens for toolbars? On Gnome2 I had a vertical bar on the right. Me beeing able to see more lines of my documents must surely be more important than having a toolbar with a clock on all the time?
