tattoos are hardly a fad, it's just become more accepted... fads don't last 5 millennia. people have been augmenting their bodies since they discovered it was possible.
in a world of drones some of us like to separate ourselves from the pack(hence the idea of a math/science tat), even at the cost of others discomfort.
