Maybe I do not have the same needs as you but I create my own lab at home with some mini itx motherboard and small factor cases and I am very happy with them.
I use Xen as server and a lot of vms.
I use a mini itx/small box for my pfsense router/firewall (and wireless access point) and a small 8 ports vlan aware switch from hp.
I can give here more detailed information if you want.
Also, it depends on what you want to test at home (clustering, cloud, ha, security, web, etc)
