    By what definition is the recession continuing? While, the job market has not recovered, I do believe we have been experiencing economic growth.

    I already have a netbook with suitably classed hardware and have no need to buy another. For my use or that particular device, a lightweight, no hassle, Internet centric OS like ChromeOS would be ideal. Unfortunately every time I have looked at installing ChromiumOS there have been video driver issues with my hardware.

    Thankfully there is scala ( http://www.scala-lang.org/ ) on the JVM to advance language functionality while Java is not. I would say C# and scala are more feature similar than C# is to Java anymore, especially if Macros end up coming out of the Roslyn project.

    Rather than running Sage in terminal, look at Sage Notebook. It is Sage with a web-based GUI. I have not played with it since they went to the new versions that include the OpenID auth; however, the math department at my alma mater host s server and had students use it for class as a replacement for Mathematica in a number of courses. I found it worked well for many things. You could either run a local copy or use one of the freely accessible online servers.
