Actually, I think it likely that the mom knew nothing of his criminal record. Not many people are honest about their shady past, either because they're trying to put it behind them or for other reasons.
A better thing to teach would be to run to a safe place and call 911. It seems that she had the opportunity to get away after the initial assault, but she wasted her time trying to get help on Facebook.
