When cheap 1024x768 LCDs are around, the Tablet PCs will become mainstream. Right now, they're hard to find, and too expensive.
PDAs are nice, but you can't use them for serious e-mail, and forget about web browsing on a 320x200 screen.
Laptops are nice, but they are not mobile. Every time I take the plane, bus or train, the battery dies on me. And in a Taxi, it's too combersome to get the laptop from your backpack, boot, use it, then shutdown and repack.
Right now, I carry my cell phone, PDA, and Laptop, and it pisses me off.
Give me a decent TabletPC under $1000 with 128 megs or Ram, hard drive, PCMCIA, and that I can run my OS of choice, and I shell out my credit card immediately.
Let's suppose for a moment I'm writing a front-end for a database using Microsoft Studio... Then I compile the code...
If I can't run unsigned apps, how will I run my own code, even though I used 100% Microsoft tools to do it?
(BTW, I don't run any Microsoft applications and I build my own machines, so I would never run a DRM-enabled system, but hey, you asked for some questions;-)
Introduction The operating system and the different components available in the Mandrake Linux distribution shall be called the "Software Products" hereafter. The Software Products include, but are not restricted to, the set of programs, methods, rules and documentation related to the operating system and the different components of the Mandrake Linux distribution.
1. License Agreement Please read carefully this document. This document is a license agreement between you and MandrakeSoft S.A. which applies to the Software Products. By installing, duplicating or using the Software Products in any manner, you explicitly accept and fully agree to conform to the terms and conditions of this License. If you disagree with any portion of the License, you are not allowed to install, duplicate or use the Software Products. Any attempt to install, duplicate or use the Software Products in a manner which does not comply with the terms and conditions of this License is void and will terminate your rights under this License. Upon termination of the License, you must immediately destroy all copies of the Software Products.
2. Limited Warranty The Software Products and attached documentation are provided "as is", with no warranty, to the extent permitted by law. MandrakeSoft S.A. will, in no circumstances and to the extent permitted by law, be liable for any special, incidental, direct or indirect damages whatsoever (including without limitation damages for loss of business, interruption of business, financial loss, legal fees and penalties resulting from a court judgement, or any other consequential loss) arising out of the use or inability to use the Software Products, even if MandrakeSoft S.A. has been advised of the possibility or occurance of such damages.
LIMITED LIABILITY LINKED TO POSSESSING OR USING PROHIBITED SOFTWARE IN SOME COUNTRIES
To the extent permitted by law, MandrakeSoft S.A. or its distributors will, in no circumstances, be liable for any special, incidental, direct or indirect damages whatsoever (including without limitation damages for loss of business, interruption of business, financial loss, legal fees and penalties resulting from a court judgement, or any other consequential loss) arising out of the possession and use of software components or arising out of downloading software components from one of Mandrake Linux sites which are prohibited or restricted in some countries by local laws. This limited liability applies to, but is not restricted to, the strong cryptography components included in the Software Products.
3. The GPL License and Related Licenses The Software Products consist of components created by different persons or entities. Most of these components are governed under the terms and conditions of the GNU General Public Licence, hereafter called "GPL", or of similar licenses. Most of these licenses allow you to use, duplicate, adapt or redistribute the components which they cover. Please read carefully the terms and conditions of the license agreement for each component before using any component. Any question on a component license should be addressed to the component author and not to MandrakeSoft. The programs developed by MandrakeSoft S.A. are governed by the GPL License. Documentation written by MandrakeSoft S.A. is governed by a specific license. Please refer to the documentation for further details.
4. Intellectual Property Rights All rights to the components of the Software Products belong to their respective authors and are protected by intellectual property and copyright laws applicable to software programs. MandrakeSoft S.A. reserves its rights to modify or adapt the Software Products, as a whole or in parts, by all means and for all purposes. "Mandrake", "Mandrake Linux" and associated logos are trademarks of MandrakeSoft S.A.
5. Governing Laws If any portion of this agreement is held void, illegal or inapplicable by a court judgement, this portion is excluded from this contract. You remain bound by the other applicable sections of the agreement. The terms and conditions of this License are governed by the Laws of France. All disputes on the terms of this license will preferably be settled out of court. As a last resort, the dispute will be referred to the appropriate Courts of Law of Paris - France. For any question on this document, please contact MandrakeSoft S.A.
Lemme see... you want 1000 machines, probably dual or even quad cpu, so 2000-4000 processors. Isn't that big enough to deal with the chip manufacturer?
Imagine the PR that the chip manufacturer would have by powering the biggest supercomputer in Canada.
Do you really want to call a systems vendor that's gonna charge you an arm and a leg to integrate your systems?
This is a University... they have all the brains and students to build it, just ship them a truckload of CPUs, Motherboard and cases, they'll save a million or two.
Maybe they didn't "port" The Sims, per se, but they *did* port DirectX to Wine...
The main difference between Loki and TransGaming is that Loki ported individual games, while the other ports the DirectX layer, so when they work on a game, you suddenly get more games working, eventually to the point where you have hundreds.
When TransGaming came to us (MandrakeSoft), they said they could port The Sims in less than two months. I must admit I was skeptical at first, but they delivered the merchandise, and we made the Mandrake Gaming Edition, which had great reviews.
When they said they would port Max Payne in the same amount of time, they delivered the merchandise.
Now, when they say they can port to other platforms, I would bet my last dollar they will deliver the merchandise again.
Great to see some fellow Canadians have success!;-)
"consistently keep your revenues higher than your expenses."
That's exactly what we're doing. This is a Club, with real benefits, such as being able to download commercial software, discounts on some products and services, access to special sections of the websites, and we keep adding new services.
People subscribe every day, people upgrade to higher levels of membership every day, and when their subscription will end, satisfied club members will renew.
It's like the newspaper, sure you can read it at the library for free, at the coffee shop while you take your coffee, but you can subscribe and have it delivered to your door for a fee.
That is a pure lie. I handle all transactions on the Mandrakestore, and we answer *all* requests.
Before we take the credit card, we log the transaction into an SQL database. Then it's passed to the bank, where they enter their credit card number. The bank keeps the transaction into their database. Then, the bank returns the data to us (without the card number), we log it again, and we send an e-mail to the customer with their receipt number, and a copy to me, stored on an offline server.
We can't possibly lose the information, unless the customer entered a bunch of "asajkd" and "adasdkj" into the fields, didn't print his invoice, and his e-mail bounced, and even then, we can ask the bank to find the info if the customer used a valid credit card number.
I need a non-folding laptop with touch-screen, or a PDA with an over-sized screen.
You don't need a keyboard to read Slashdot, read your mailing lists, removing all your SPAM, moving important messages in your TODO list.
Then, if you need keyboard input, just use a Virtual Keyboard or graffiti-like thingy like TrollTech has done for the Zaurus.
And finally, when you're in the office or at home, just plugin a keyboard and mouse and you can do the normal office tasks.
Oh, and by the way, if you post links, please only post URLs that have a "Buy" button, with a price, and with the mention of "In Stock, Shipping Now".
I don't want "real-soon-now" or "If-you-need-to-ask-the-price-its-too-expensive" type of links.
The LCD is the key here.

Why do the words "(so far)" give me the shivers?

They charge $199 for certificate, and have a pretty good service. I've been using them for years.

Mandrake Linux 9.0 will ship with both...
1.3 in the main distro, and 2.0 in the contribs.
Don't forget, yesterday's supercomputers are today's pocket calculators...
Lemme see... you want 1000 machines, probably dual or even quad cpu, so 2000-4000 processors. Isn't that big enough to deal with the chip manufacturer?

A university I know is building a 1000-node Beowulf (yeah, I said the B word) and called both Intel and AMD.
;-)
Intel dispatched a suit and an engineer right away, and was very aggressive on price.
They're still waiting for the AMD guy to show up.
I think Intel is trying to push every resource it can to dominate the market, and they had very good results so far.
AMD: Wake Up!
Actually, I'm a karma whore ;-)
You have very good arguments and I couldn't agree more.
;-)
Some days I like to be the Devil's advocate, it makes for interesting discussions
According to:? query =port

2. To translate software to run on a different system or the results of doing so. See portability.
I think Transgaming fits that definition.
They did port the DirectX layer, then tweaked the source so it would run fine on Linux.
OK, it's not "native", but I haven't seen the word "native" in the article, on in timothy's comment.
I'll definitely pass your comment to the MandrakeSoft Sales Director.
I guess I should ask our Sales Director about this, but it would be a nice idea.
Maybe they didn't "port" The Sims, per se, but they

I am Canadian, so you just lost karma for nuthin.
I got your point.

Was that on 8.2 beta or the final version?
And also, did you submit a bug report, or ask your question on www.mandrakeexpert.com so we can see what was wrong and fix it for you?
Your issues are mostly harware issues. It might be a pretty vanilla system, but pretty vanilla flaky hardware is common.

I'm e-mailing the guy right now.
