  1. I can't agree more on Scott McCloud on Comics and the Internet, part 2 · · Score: 1

With the current industry troubles, I am really starting to come around to the idea of micro payments. If there was a more feasible way of transferring money similar to pay pal but on a smaller scale I would be all over it.

The author wanting to be paid for his work I feel to be obvious. One of the things that make me nuts however, is when artists decide that since there is no more middlemen, that they then should receive that total amount of money at the old price. That is absurd! If an album is released on MP3 the cost of production is a lot closer to zero then pressing compact discs. Now a lot of artists think they should be able to sell albums in mp3 for $10 - 15 dollars. I absolutely would not pay a price that high!!

With micro payments artists could be compensated more for their work then is currently the case. It could also prevent absurd gouging like Stephan King's the plant.

  2. What about free trade agreements? on U.S. Judge To Hear Yahoo! Web-Blocking Case · · Score: 1

I think this helps show why there needs to be some sort of international agreements governing commerce. Now I am not saying that I support the WTO or other trading agreements the U.S. has entered into. However, if you Yahoo were able to get a judgment from an American judge, wouldn't the next step be the United States bringing a case against France in the World Trade Organization?

I really believe that we need to have some international mechanism that deals with issues like this. Commercial speech versus political speech and other issues like that. I just wish the process for the average international citizen (I'm an American) wasn't so lacking in democratic representation.

  3. Re:Check out Spector on Ethically Monitoring Your Kid's Net Access · · Score: 1

I have to agree. My when my younger sister was about 14 yrs old, some guy sent her a picture of himself naked in an AOL chat room. I was there when her friends were laughing at "how fat and old he was". No mutilated minds, no one screaming in horror.

That incident helped me decide that if I have kids, I would have nothing to do with censorship. I could not agree more with the above post. My parents for the most part, acted in a shepard capacity (of course they weren't specifically familiar with the net). I like to think that I'm a reasonably well adjusted adult.

I also worked at a video rental store for a while. Occasionally a little kid would accidentally end up wandering into the back room. No kids head exploded as far as I remember!

  4. Re:Nostalgia... on Dr. Who To Come Back To The BBC · · Score: 1

I might be a little younger than you (24yrs) but that show used to scare the hell out of me! I think that the reason my parents let me watch it in the eighties is only because it was being replayed on PBS. I remember I would watch Sesame Street, then the Electric Company. Since Dr. Who was on immediately following, I often got to watch that before dinner as well. In retrospect, I can't believe my parents allowed this day in and day out, due to the fact that I always came to the dinner table fairly freaked out and concerned about the future of the English countryside.

  6. Scratch an itch on Computer Curriculum for Inner City Kids? · · Score: 1

I think the best idea is to find out what the kids you are helping are into and help them advance in that. I remember being sent to a computer school in the summer when I was about nine years old. We spent weeks trying to learn LOGO. I can honestly say that it was one of the most boring experiences in my entire life.

The same method is also bad for newer technologies. IMO it would be a bad idea to push HTML on kids. They want to make web pages! As their skills improve they will start to learn these things without your help. You should be getting them to love technology (even if it's just playing games all summer). Not making anyone sit in the heat trying to make a stupid turtle go around a screen!

Since moving to NYC I can say that I don't hear many people speaking in the above mentioned "Jive" fashion. I seem to remember hearing it a lot in the suburbs where I came from. Always in reference to black people or white people who other white people thought were acting like black people. Which is apparently very bad

  11. putting aside the hypothesis on Canadian Recording Industry Claims Drop in Sales · · Score: 1

Without getting into the idea of whether or not Canadians "steal" more the Americans, I must say that I've been very impressed with my connections to their P2P clients. The internet definitely seems (from my point of view as an American) better understood in general. Can a Canadian shed some light on the technological literacy in their nation? I'm curious does technological literacy mean web surfing? Or does it do deeper into things like ftp, finger, Ssh, etc?

  12. I wouldn't mind an ebook at all on Shadowmarch Launched · · Score: 1

It never ceases to amaze me the way old industries try to force old business models on newer methods of distribution. Isn't one of the large alleged virtues of free markets and capitalism, the idea that with competition and innovation, prices are supposed to decrease, benefiting the consumer.

I recognize that I'm in the minority of Slashdot readers now, in that I don't mind reading e-books all that much (Although I suspect you all would not mind it as much as you think). But there is absolutely no way in hell I would be willing to pay anywhere near the current prices for hardcover books, without getting the book! Where does the money go? Pure profit?

Imagine that my business made you wait around a few more years, so that I could implement a system where my cost of production will plummet to around zero. This is the same thing that the record and movie companies are trying to do, but I think its much more dramatic because the cost of manufacturing books is vary high compared to music, DVDs, etc.. Anyone able to give more specifics on the economics of this?

I feel that companies are an in appropriate venue to give charity. Mandrake should be concerned about their bottom line not soliciting or accepting donations. What will happen when they do something that we don't like? Boy will we be pissed then!! Am I the only one that sees this as a bad idea?

I wouldn't exactly buy a product just because I liked and understood it. The idea behind stock ownership is that you are buying a piece of the company with the expectation that you will profit. When you buy stock liking it isn't good enough. You also have to take into account what the price is for that piece of the company. What about how the company earns? Or its potential to earn? It's sectors outlook in the market? If Mandrake has a economic outlook that suits you, then buy it! But don't just contribute money to alleviate guilt! Keep in mind this is a for-profit firm. Invest if you want, but don't contribute.
