I am slightly face blind. I meet you today, I don't recognize you tomorrow. I recognize people I know well, but not if I haven't seen them for a long time. I have developed a skill to keep talking to someone until I find out who they are. I frequently recognize people by their voice. This thing would be a great help to me.
Learn Android. I see a lot of demand for Android developers today. Android requires basic knowledge of Java, but only basic skills. The android framework is very different from other Java frameworks.
If time travel is possible, then at one point in time they will actually physically travel to our times. But we don't see them, do we? Even if they have instructions to not make themselves known, if you wait long enough one will, and will travel to our time or before. Unless of course the world ends soon after time travel has become an option.
Female and male sofware engineers should receive equal payment. Female engineers should get half the total payment, males get the other half. That's only fair, isn't it?
Google should not block anything. The police should catch child abusers, and other criminals. If Google blocks content, there's less pressure on members of parliament to increase funds for catching child abusers. As one of the founders of meldpunt.org and inhope.org, I've always said criminal content should not be blocked, but rather the criminals should be caught.
We should hope aliens never find us. Because, they're certainly not less developed than we are, or how would they find us or we them? Then, the chance that they are exactly in the same stage of development as we are is next to zero. Most probably, they are a million years ahead of us, and we would be to them what cockroaches are to us. Please don't let them find us.
Any good (and preferably free as in "don't cost money") docs you can recommend? I've been wanting to do some stuff with Android, but coding has never been my forte.
If you have to ask this question, you should stick to formal training.
I don't do formal trainings, not any more. I'm happy with my focus on Android, but if I'd want to switch to other technologies, I'd download the tools and read the docs on the web. Same as I did for Android.
I know the man, although when I last saw him was in the '90's. He's actually a nice man. But I don't think he knows a lot about the internet, like, the bigger picture of it. The founders of Meldpunt all ran (and still run) their own linux servers, while in most of the other hotlines, let alone in the advisory councils, there were suits and police officers whith entirely different backgrounds.
Oh, and as for blocking child porn sites: blocking those sites makes them unavailable to the general public. They will remain available for pedophiles, one way or another. But if they're not visible for most people, no one will urge their members of parliament to spend more money on catching pedophiles. As a founder of Meldpunt.org, I know for a fact that if the stuff is visible, papers and blogs write about it, and the government (parliament and police) take action. If child porn had been blocked from the start, it would have still been there, the same number of kids would have been sexually molested, but there would have been no Internet Watch Foundation or Meldpunt, or Missingkids for that matter.
Both John Carr and I have been involved in the foundation of Inhope.org. But ever since hotlines and online child protection came into fashion, there's been differences in policies in various countries in Europe. In the Netherlands, policy makers, service providers and volunteers have always had their focus on preventing and fighting (pictures of) online child abuse (aka "child pornography"). In the UK, the focus has been on protecting childrens poor souls from seeing things that policy makers think children should not see. Hence, they block the obvious porn sites, leaving only the more hidden and nasty sites for children to visit. Even the EU in the early 90's quickly switched from preventing online child abuse to blocking porn. There was plenty of subsidy from the EU to local hotlines (of which Meldpunt was the first and the Internet Watch Foundation second), but as the focus shifted, Meldpunt was party left out from the subsidies, because it kept its focus where it should be: preventing and fighting child sexual abuse.
Sex is part of life. Educating children about sex makes them better prepared for life as an adult. You can easily see that by comparing stats for porn intolerance and teen pregnancies. Holland has a very low teen pregnancy number. And if parents don't want their kids to see online sex, why can't we just leave that to parents?
Governments should spend tons of money catching the guys who sexually abuse children. They should not interfere with sexual education, let alone censor the internet.
I thought spiral galaxies that collide don't actually merge, because their stars don't collide. The dust and gas however, does merge. So what you have after the "collision" of two spiral galaxies is two galaxies without dust and gas that move away from each other, and a cloud of dust and gas that remains in the middle.
I haven't met a programmer in the last 20 years who's older than me. This makes it very easy for me to make clear to them that if I can keep my knowledge up to date, so can they. If they haven't, they should simply go.
Djigzo email encryption gateway is open source, you can download a free version from www.djigzo.com. It supports S/MIME, it has a lot of cool features. Used by major corporations all over the world. Just give it a try, it's free.
I am an Android app developer. But I won't buy a laptop with Android. In linux, and even on Windows, you can open a shell and have access to the OS of your computer. Android doesn't have such a thing. Which means, you can use your Android laptop only in the way the vendor intended you to. You have access to settings only through the UI, which is, to the settings that the vendor allows you to change. I would buy an Android laptop only if I can get a shell with it that gives me access to the full OS.

It's always sad when superstition prevails upon science.
I thought it said Female Software Engineers May Be Even Scarier Than We Thought.
We are.

Do people still use calculators?

When I hire a programmer, my first goal is to find out how much fun they have coding. Without that, I don't hire them.
