I usually put together a spread sheet of use cases, what currently hapens, in the case of a bug or automating a process and what should happen.

There's then a bit a back and forth, itterating over the processes until both the user and I understand what's going on.

If the user asks for something then I will always re-write it in my own words and get the user to confirm that this is the case.

    an example may be

    Process:

MTA's with an MTA between the current risk and the time of the MTA

e.g. A customer asks for his wife to be put on the policy in a weeks time and then a change of vehicle in two weeks time, the aditional driver MTA is in-between the current risk and the COV.

    Resolution:

an MTA must use the risk at it's effective date, if the in-between MTA is deleted, it must delete all MTA's after it.

    user comment 1:

Is this not the same as CLX003 ? If not further detail required[CLX003 being another process listed on the sheet]

response: (use case, a bit more detailed than the first)

A customer phones up and asks for his wife to be put on the policy in a weeks time. A couple of days later he says he's moving house in 2 weeks time:The first MTA is actioned 'between' the current risk and the second.

the use cases are also good for testing.

    To go back on topic,

The scumping referance is quite good, as the tree will produce new apples at no 'real' cost, I could even throw the apple core away and a new tree could spring up.

Virtual goods are like apples, there will always be more, and even if you chop down the tree, one of the cores from a prebious apple could still grow a new tree(in less than a generation).

This is the opposite to material goods, if I take oil there is no way that oil will be replenished in a generation or even my life time, so as far as I'm concerend Oil has infinate value.

'SEATTLE (Reuters) - In a major strategy shift, Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) will introduce software based on the Linux (news - web sites) open source operating system in 2004 for Web services and server software, market researcher META Group predicted on Monday. ' .......

; this will gradually include the major Microsoft back-office products, such as SQL Server, IIS, and Exchange," META Group said.

So there going to sell insecure web services, over say Apache, web services is M$'s weekest market, and IIS i can see people buying IIS on Linux.

SQL server, hmm... why.... Oracle, DB2, anything else except SQL server is already on Linux, they havn't a hope.

There only viable Server port would be Exchange since there isn't a non-windows variant, but that would be dangerious for M$, since there are a few companies who only have windows boxes for Exchange.

MONO are already doing .NET, so no room for M$ there either.

I steal X, the owner no longer has X and has been permently deprived.

Case A: I just breach the copyright, this is not stealing. As I like to call it, I have scrumped a copy, there will be copies tomorrow and copies next year, I've just obtained one without permission.

    Case B: I've stolen.

n.b. Scrumping is the find English art of running into someones garden (usually as a child) and picking an apple from an apple tree without getting caught.
It is normally expected by apple tree owners that children will scrump and it's largely overlooked or ignored.
If the branches overhand the road then you are allowed to pick the apples, this is not scrumping it's your right, if they overhang your garden then you must ask the owners permission(otherwise your scrumping).
