'is not geared towards excellence, it is geared towards the average'
Well in my experiances the average is deamed to be excellence, if you in any different, off the wall or excel but not in a way that fits the average is is not usualy considered to be 'constructive' in the education system.
Just a bit on OOP so as not to be off topic,
You can write C in and object orientated way even though there is no real language support for objects in C.
the old jpeg library was written like this, and I believe GTK is written this way (why they don't use C++ i'll never know?)
One way to teach OOP is to get some spagettie and get the 'class' to refactor the code(aided and abbeted by the teacher!) not only does this teach OOP but it teaches the reasons why OOP is good.

First four sentences are: " Millions of people using Microsoft's Office and Internet Explorer programs are at risk from security holes that could allow malicious hackers to change files on their computers. The vulnerable programs include Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, Money 2002, Money 2003, Project 2002 as well as software used on internet servers.
The world's leading software maker has advised computer users to close the critical holes by downloading software patches from its website.

Pie-Menus in Mozilla

Well here's my experiance,
I use linux+mozilla at home and IE at work, open link in new tab is in the same directional location in mozilla as save target as in IE, about 10% of the time I select save target as instead of open in new window in IE.
I totally agree, Personally I would hate the idea of pie menus. My muscular control of my hands in a arbitrary angle is far less than in a vertical/horizontal movement.
I found it very dificuly(almost impossible at times) to get some of the gestures in black and white and the leash ended up getting detached half the time(most annoying during a fight)
Give the design of most things (several thousand years of design in some cases) it would appear that that is true of most people.
Pie menus also have a back tracking problem (unless you use semi pie menus)
Personally I prefer keyboard shortcuts which I can remember easily (just like a bit of music, alt+s, f) or (esc , esc , q , ! , return). or whatever.
I agree, 'The RIAA has no business attempting to legislate its business plan into law.'
A reasonable amount of the government is 'owned' by the RIAA/MPAA/(insert any big multi national or organisation), they are the law.
And then there's that morphine drip problem, look at all those happy numb-braied people wandering around, there great I haven't seen a bit riot/strike for ages no government wants the people to interfere with what there doing(there jobs are at steak!) and the RIAA/MPAA... provide one hell of a big morphine drip.
Please take the comment with a pinch of salt I couldn't think of any non imotive language!
I think that the government should intervene before this line... 'People perceive that the recording studios are the only way to make it in the music industry.'
Theres a couple of ways they could do this,
1: Teach all kids to think of everyone as a lieing cheating bastard until they can proven otherwise.
2: Have a general morality schooling.
the problem is that no one would go for 1 and it's just stupid the problem with 2 is that the powermongers would impose there 'truth justice and the american way'(sic)'sudo christian' morality on everyone which is what the caused the 'when I grow up I'm going to be a big holywood star' problem in the first palce.
The only thing that can be done is to bring up your kids in a liberal way and try to inform evryone about what's going on, though taking away the morphine drip might be a tricky thing to do?

I'll repeat my self again!! 'that's my point about dialog you use it when the user doesn't know whats going on.'.... to tell them what has happened.
the idea that "'OK' is to acknowledging that they have read the message. Hell i didn't even read the [ok] [cancel] bit of your first post i read [ok] [not ok].
The default option should always be to give the user an opotunity to recover from the unexpected, the first 'ahhhh..... something weird has happened' dialog should lead the user into the recovery process and should not require the user to fully understand or even read the dialog.
'There has been an error somthing will happen' options [ok] [cancel]
so ok makes something happen, what does cancel do? does it roll-back whatever was requested before hand 'context'?
'Continue closing the application even though you have unsaved changes' [ok] [cancel]
This is poor, the user should be given the recovery option i.e. to save there changes. [ok] [cancel] gives the user no clear path to perform an operation on there unsaved changes.
Lets say I'm the worlds best drain cleaner, i can clean drains like no-one else and enjoy it.
All the local (100miles around) drains are owned by a big company that requires I sign my soul over if I wan't a job.
Now I could setup my own drain company, but I'm good at cleaning drains, not running companies.
I could work for the independant drain company that works a couple of blocks but I think I'm much better than that.(I'm the best drain cleaner in the world).
So my choices are,
Move away to somewhere where the big drain company has no nasty clauses.
Work for the big drain company and sell my soul
Work for the small drain company and not get the recognission I deserve.
Get a different job and be unhappy for the rest of my life.
No his math is wrong, an entire lifetimes use of the movie costs $40 so a nights showing might be valued at between $0.1 and $1 depending upon how many times it would be reasonable to watch the movie in a life time.

A lot of project management is run this way (in my experaince any hows) and it usually leads to a bad overrun project that doesn't do what the user wanted. Overrun badly managed projects have a greater visibility than poor UI and there's a lot of common elements.
The default option should be to recover what you are doing not loose it. if OK is don't close you can always try and close the application again, and actually read what the box says if you have to
if Ok is close there's no way your ever going to recover potentially lost work.
that's why the VB yes/no's are the wrong way arround, you loose the work you've put into install the application and have to start over.
don't forget the alert is because of a problem in following the action you have requested.
The message isn't as important as the context, when i close something i expect 'yes' to be 'save the file' not 'yes close the application without saving'. Why would the application alert me to a task I've chosen to perform(closing the application)?
The VB default installer programme has a good example of the yes no error, as i remember yes quits the install and no retries whatever caused the error.
