  1. Re:Firefox quick searches on Vint Cerf Answering Questions on Top-Level Domains · · Score: 1

I'll admit that this is one of the coolest features that until I read your post, didn't know it existed. After adding Google my second search keyword was 'imdb' because I'm constantly going to IMDB.com and I hated having to go there and then type in the search box. Now I know I'll waste the rest of my work day trying to find other sites that I need a shortcut for!!

I'm wondering why the Slashdot search box doesn't work?

Yeah, the Earth Simulator http://www.es.jamstec.go.jp/ does try to do this, however it does a vast number of other things as well. The other systems focus on more specific incident (such as Ivan), thus more computing power is aim'd at a short-term problem.

Earth Simulator does - Atmosphere & Ocean Simulation, Solid Earth Simulation, Multiscale Simulation, and Advanced Precipitation Simulations. (And other cooperative projects).

  11. Flyswat on "Smart Tags," Round Two · · Score: 1

Currently there are already products out there that do this. One that I use sometimes at work is called FlySwat (www.flyswat.com) and it adds so-called HotSpots on the page that you can click on to take you to the information you need. An example is when I am on a page with the word 'Slashdot', which then shows up with a yellow line under it and when I click it, I have the option to go to www.slashdot.org.

Now there is a difference here because FlySwat was installed by me with a choice whereas IE 6.0 will have this 'feature' enabled by default and it takes you to www.microsoft.com URLs.

If MS wants to have this feature in IE 6.0 it will have to leave it up to the user whether or not to have it enabled.

  17. What's different from IRL? on Electronic Signatures Now Legal? · · Score: 1

What is the difference from making a fake e-signature and defrauding a company then signing a fake check and defrauding a company? Nothing! Non-electronic and Non-internet-but-electronic fraud costs companies millions and millions of dollars a year.

Obvisouly there are going to extensive problems with this that will take alot of time and planning to get around but if companies use current antifraud measures against this it will save alot of money and legal battles.

It is something new but also something that is needed. As everything moves into the digital realm it is best to get legal issues like this figured out before the corporate world takes more control of the net.

  23. Turbo Pascal on Best Way to Get Kids Started in Programming? · · Score: 1

Yes it is outdated, and yes it's not object oriented but it has it good points. Our school program (4 years ago) had programming in Turing for a year to get use to the concept of programming. This step could be skipped for most computer literate kids. Then Learning in Turbo Pascal. You learn alot of the basics of programming in a realy simple language. You can extend to file system - taking in/out files etc. And also make some cheap games like Space Invaders or Pong or as I did - AI Tic Tac Toe. With Pascal you can move onto Delphi which is perfect because it takes Pascal and just makes it object oriented. Honestly that is probably one of the best ways to learn.
