  1. US Sales Tax on North Carolina Tries to Tax Online Purchases · · Score: 1

Sales tax varies from state to state, but you generally pay no sales tax on food (but you do pay sales tax on beer! what gall!) Also, clothing is usually exempt. In my state of Connecticut I believe you only pay sales tax on an article of clothing if that article of clothing costs more than $100.

  4. Kinko can issue IDs... on IDs in Color Copies · · Score: 1

In order to use a Kinko's copier, they could require you sign up for a card needed to activate the copier. Under the guise of convenience (the card could work like a debit card) they could identify who was making the copies and insert a watermark into the copy that identified the card. Of course, you could give false information when getting the card, and I doubt Kinkos is going to start demanding picture ID to get a copier card, but still...

Do a little research on this engine...rather clever design. Great torque for a small size. I have a 98 Jetta with this engine and I love it. It rattles a bit, and I've had to upgrade the suspension so it could keep up with the motor. I think I will keep this car for a long long time.

  11. Re:What's groupware? on Lotus Domino for Linux goes Gold · · Score: 1

I can't speak for Exchange, but Notes is rather like an application server. You can design what is called in Notes-speak "databases" (Although they are not relational and have many features not associated with a true DB). The databases store data in instances of "forms" which are similar in functionality to a javascript enabled web-form. Once you operate a form and fill in data, etc... it is stored and can be viewed in...get this..."views". There are events for everything UI related in a form...you can write the handling functions in LotusScript or Java...using Java is very powerful as you can imagine. The Mail/Calender functionality is simply one of many possible databases. My company uses Notes for everything (some apps are more successful than others). We do our travel expenses on a Notes database that exploits an LDAP Whitepages to gather database not stored in the Notes central address book. Payroll adjustments like direct deposit changes/initiation, 401k deduction and stock purchase deduction changes/initiation are all done via Notes. This is secure because your Notes ID file contains a public Key which is used to authenticate the user.

The only caveat to Notes is the un-scalability of the NABs (but now you can use LDAP as your address book!) and the fact that the user interface is sometimes infuriatingly obtuse and rigid. All in all, it's a pretty good product. Just don't run it on NT.

  14. LDAP URL format... on Communicator Is Losing The War..... · · Score: 1

I like NS because when I hit an LDAP server I get all the attributes. IE pops up it's idiotic "address book" and tries to make the server schema fit with the MS schema. Useless. Oh yeah, and when NS locks, I can kill it and restart. When IE freezes, my ^&#*^ TASK BAR is useless! Often the explorer as well! Bah.

  24. AMD Indifference? (Off Topic) on AMD Planning 1GHz CPUs · · Score: 1

Has anyone noticed that AMD stock is not doing much? I mean, with all these announcements and especially with Intel going down you'd think someone would take a chance on AMD. I guess they're worried that AMD won't be able to supply enough product. Just seems silly that a market that'll jump at any company with dot-com in it's name won't back a very strong contender for the consumer desktop CPU market. Well I'm gonna buy some AMD soon...if it tanks it tanks, but it's something I gotta do.
