  1. Re:'For Dummies' a surprise on GNU/Linux For Dummies: A Brief Survey · · Score: 2

Not surprising. My first exposure to Linux was through a Linux for dummies book written by Jon 'Maddog' Hall himself. It gave me the foundation I needed to go on to more advanced stuff. I ended up using the command shell far more than KDE or GNOME. The books are very nice for gently easing you into an operating system that has a pretty steep learning curve.

Here is a couple of good ones: >Vision of Escaflowne (I really like this one) >Record of Lodoss War (Series and OAV) >Gundam 0083 >Nadisco (This one is hilarious) >Cowboy Bebop. There are others but these are my personal favorites.

  3. Buffer Overflow idiocy on Report Of New Outlook Exploit · · Score: 1

I am curious if they ever taught anyone in school to ALWAYS CHECK IF THE BUFFER HAS BEEN FILLED! Seriously, this is one of the most basic lessons of computer science.

  4. Could work well if... on Sun May GPL StarOffice · · Score: 2

I can see this work well if Staroffice is modified and improved along the same lines as the linux kernel, tightly controlled under a small group of people who are VERY familiar with source code, and recieve code enhancements from others outside the group. If the addition or modification is worth incorporating into the office suite then it is done and a new version is put online. Just imagine: Staroffice 6.0, 6.1, 6.1.1.

  5. Quite impressed on Government Gives Microsoft Offer Thumbs Down · · Score: 2

It seems that for every media circus trial *cough*OJ*cough* there is a trial like this where the case is handled methodically and intelligently by the court. Do you have a feeling that the judge is starting to lose patience with Microsoft's attempts at stalling? I know I am. I am just wondering how they are going to split Microsoft's overseas branches.
