  1. The Practical SQL Handbook Highly Recommended on SQL Book Recommendations? · · Score: 1

The Practical SQL Handbook is a good reference to use while learning SQL. I referred to it often while "cutting my teeth" on Informix's perverse database.

  2. Festival Text To Speech (TTS) on Ask Slashdot: Linux and Telephony · · Score: 1

I am impressed with Festival. RedHat RPMs and Debian packages are available.

It comes with several British voice. Several American, a Mexican Spanish and a German voice are available from Oregon Graduate Institue.

Call me a nerd but I like to hear the original voices quotes my favorite lines from Monty Python.

  3. PMRC, Exactly! on Al Gore Goes "Open Source" · · Score: 1

I thought that once Clinton choose Gore as a running mate, Tipper's involvement in PMRC would produce a flood of protest from the MTV crowd. It didn't; in fact I think MTV turned out to be a total tool for his campaign.

If Tipper had succeeded then some music would be BANNED! Fortunately we now have stickers on CDs instead. Now pre-teens know exactly what music to buy - the CDs that have explicit lyrics stickers. *thanks*

Al and Tipper have a legacy of wrong-thinking and ineffective policies on privacy, abortion and censorship.

Anybody who adheres to common sense and relishes their privacy and freedom will make their Y2k vote a vote against Gore.

  4. Matrix Isn't Mnemonic on Katz vs. Taco: The Matrix · · Score: 1

Matrix has all of the right components - a dark movie without being too serious or silly. A reviewer at CNN.com compared the fight sequences to the slow motion fights found in Anime. The camera trick where time appears to freeze and the view pans around the actor certainly emphasizes the conflict. Kung fu, anyone?

I see a lot of posts bashing Kenau (sp?) Reeve's role as the teenage headbanger in "Bill and Ted"s. Actually I dug the movie at the time. A moronic role fit the light-weight comedy.

Actually the most embarassing stuff are Reeve's oh-so-recent movies including: "Devil's Advocate" and the uninspiring "Johnny Mnemonic".

Thankfully this movie isn't Mnemonic Part II. It is intelligent and entertaining. It works!
