It's not so open and shut as "emulators are legal, period."
Where did Nintendo say they were illegal? I read the same FAQ you did, and I don't see that anywhere. They did say they believe UltraHLE was illegal, and I remember this was because they said they had reason to believe the authors referred to the N64 software to create their EMU.
You're right, emulators are perfectly legal... but only if they are designed in a clean room, where none of the authors have seen the code for the software they are emulating. Some emulator authors have worked in clean room situations. Did the UltraHLE authors do this? I don't know, but Nintendo does not believe so. Have they proved it in a court of law yet? I don't think so.
Methinks you'd be singing a different tune if you had royalties coming in off of a console game you labored 12 months to create.
You people that want your precious freedoms better read the constitution again. It gives you the right to pursue happiness, so long as you don't start infringing on other people's rights to do the same.
So you can boycott Nintendo all you want, but you better do it for real, and throw away all your Nintendo EMU's and ROM's.
Hey mom, let's go rent Donkey Kong so I can download it and play it for the weekend as a ROM!
Somehow I find it very hard to swallow that you actually do this. But let's say you really do this... $10 says the majority of emulator users don't -- but you'll never get them to admit it. Why should they, when you can't prove it?
"Rock stars also let you tape to a DAT! Get a grip."
Let you tape WHAT to a DAT? A live concert? A CD you already own? You're comparing apples to oranges. Why should you be able to download a game for free that Nintendo licenses or has created, and means to sell in the stores? Just because you don't have the money, or don't feel like paying for it doesn't make it right or legal.
Let's not confuse being righteous with being illegal.
As for your last paragraph, you seem to be hinting that people use Emulators to play games written by people outside of the console business... people like you and me. It sounds like you need to get real. How many of these types of games do you play (or have you ever seen)? People download emulators to play games copied from cartridges... usually ones they don't own.
>There are hundred/thousands of languages, and the >last thing we need is to learn a language with >each application, just because it was hyped on >slashdot:-(
Then again, should we ignore new languages just because they're new? Many said the same things when C, Perl, and Java all first came out.
But I agree that PERL is perfect for this job (Practical Extraction and Reporting Language eh?)
#1 I have seen the OS API's for Windows, Linux, and BeOS. There is no comparison: BeOS looks by far to be the most elegant design, and from what I've been seeing from other programmers that are writing for it, it is a pure joy. It all boils down to the complete OO design.
#2 If you think $70 is a ridiculous price for such an elegant OS, you are in the minority. Most people have no problem paying Microsoft $90 and up for a pile of shit OS (and I know, because I have to use it every day!)
#3 "Mix in an operating system that you have to pay for that relies on third party developers to write software (most of it free) and expect it to make a killing?!? No way."
Excuse me... you just described Windows and about half a dozen other OS companies that aren't doing so bad.
WTF does this have to do with capitalism? Capitalism means NOT ALIENATING YOUR CUSTOMERS so that they'll continue to do business with you and you will continue to profit.
This is just plain old fucking GREED (I believe that's older than capitalism).
Exqueeze me, I meant PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE of course, not the national anthem. Gawd knows the National Anthem is that horrid song women butcher before sporting events.
(I'm in favor of a switch to "America The Beautiful.")
What do you expect from a country that practices separation of church and state while simultaneously printing "In God We Trust" on the money and exclaiming "One nation, under God, indivisible" in the NATIONAL ANTHEM!
Get your money and scratch it out. Teach your kids the original national anthem ("...one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all...").
What's wrong with VBR encoding? I'm working on converting my CD's to MP3's, and I'm using Xing's "-v 75" setting (averages 160kbps). This to me sounds a lot better than when I did some CD's at 128kbps straight (non VBR).
I thought the point of VBR was to give you better sounding files at smaller sizes (because it can drop down in speed during 'low' points in the song)?
Aaaaahhhh I would hate to get all my CD's done and then find out I chose the encoding scheme poorly...:-(
Well you think wrong. Paper books are nice for antiques, collectors items, special editions signed by the author, etc. But e-books are going to take the market over by storm within a few years (once the standards are set).
I'm sorry, but carrying around one e-book with ALL my O'Reilly books, the Lord of the Rings, all my Stephen King books, all my Michael Crichton books, my school textbooks, etc. is just WAY TOO APPEALING.
Not to mention downloading your local paper from their website before you head off to school/work/play.
I mean, I know they said they'd TRY for the end of March, but how many times has id delivered the product exactly when they first predicted? Plus, usually Blue's News hypes it a little bit before it's going to come out (like, "prepare for an all-nighter everyone").
I'm looking forward to Q3A just as much as the next guy (unless you're the next guy), but I do not believe they ever PROMISED it by the end of March, and even if they had, what makes you think yesterday was the last day of March? My calendar says the 31st is the last day.
Be patient... just think, Star Wars Ep. I is only FIFTY-TWO days away!!!
I don't know a damn thing about Eric, but I do know when someone has egg on his face...
Claiming "you just don't get it" without trying to explain what it is we're supposed to "get" is pathetic. Worse still, you then insult the person that just shoved some REAL FACTS into your face.
Why not try to prove that Eric isn't a "hacker"... perhaps dispute some of those claims on the resume, or however you think you can dispute this.
P.S. This is a stupid thread as it is, but you did start it...

Perl has how many years on Java? Apples and oranges are no fun to compare. You would probably be lying to yourself if you claimed that Java does not have amazing distribution and maturity for such a young language.
If you MUST compare languages (a trivial and useless exercise usually), let's at least compare Perl when it was 4 years old with Java now.
That'd be a fairer comparison, say, like apples and pears.
Oh lord... THAT WOULD DEPEND ON THE JOB, RIGHT?

I love Perl. I love Java. They are different, use them differently. Blanket statements like, "I would venture to guess then a good perl programmer could out produce a good jave [sic] programmer by 2 to 1," are incredibly ignorant.
There are, believe it or not, things that can be easily done in Java and not done AT ALL in Perl. Likewise, there are things that can be done in Perl (regex/text stuff) that is much more difficult to do in Java (but probably not impossible).
That's why we have >1 language available.
