Grandparent mentioned something to the effect that it was in Hubble's favor that it's still a benchmark for ground-based telescopes, and I was noting that one reason for the Hubble's good performance is simply that it's in space, where it doesn't have to deal with Earth's atmosphere. So the fact that it's still a benchmark is partly a testament to the clarity possible in space.
Wouldn't the same telescope put into space give better images than one on Earth already? So it's partly a testament to the advantage space-based telescopes have.
Nonsense! Tech should be included in everything. I'm still trying to figure out how to modernize my silverware, though. I've tried lots of electronic improvements, but they keep failing (and shocking my tongue when I eat). Spoons and forks are just so old-fashioned, darn it.
But all that copying of the same bits, that puts a huge stress on them (especially the 1s). The bits that make up this open-source software could fail at any time, due to everyone using them. Think of the bits!
This isn't even freeloading, because it doesn't put any load on a project to use a copy of its source code. This isn't something physical where it's limited.
You can transform an image in a way that loses no information, but makes it look worse to humans. The idea here is to transform a blurry image into one we can more readily pick out the detail information, even though the original held it.
For the past 8 years or so, MicroSoft has been co-author on more papers than any other organization at SIGGRAPH. This is impressive because SIGGRAPH has a the highest paper rejection rate of any conference I know of - they reject (or downgrade to non-published session) 85% of the paper submissions. And you have to submit publication-ready papers nearly a year in advance, with a video summary.
I don't follow your logic. Why would a high rejection rate affect the relative number of accepted papers of one company as compared to another? It would reduce each proportionally, for example if A submitted 1000 and B submitted 100, A might have 150 accepted and B 15 accepted, for the same ratio: 10:1.
That's on average less then 5MB per day. If I read a few 400 comment threads on slashdot or fark I already have to download that much html. What are these people doing with their phones?
Wow, never knew such a "Quote Parent" button existed in the full interface. I use the simplified one, due to what OS/browser I have access to, so I don't see that. Nice to know, anyway.
Awesome story. Reminds me of the Apple IIs in school where we'd make a short BASIC program that did its own command prompt, but gave you confusing responses. Great hilarity.
Being able to do mental arithmetic is a practical skill like any other. If you don't have a use for it, it doesn't matter that you have forgotten how. I've forgotten how to do long division, but I've had very little need to do so. Even when implementing long division on an 8-bit micro, the binary nature gives it a somewhat different character. I can be the most effective by using the tools around me to automate things, leaving me to do the things that cannot be automated.
You have a right to not buy TI products. TI has a right to sell you whatever crap they want, as long as they don't misrepresent it. What they're fighting for is the continued ability to run their own software on the calculators. That is not a right.
My friend, $600 will buy you a lot, but a cable that works with the newest HDMI standards it will not. May I interest you in our $1200 version? It's twice the pri.. quality. And in case you want higher quality YouTube videos, we've got the amazing Denon AK-DL1 Ethernet cable. It will sharpen your web-browsing experience, and make it run faster.
The warrants are required in order to limit the damage possible by the bad guys who inevitably are among those in the FBI. In other words, warrants are there to stop the bad guys, not get in the way of the good guys! They slow the good guys down slightly, but they slow the bad guys down even more, therefore they have a net positive benefit. So you have to ask who it is who's objecting to warrants... hmmm.

Or even just a reduced image that you can click on to get a magnified portion. Doesn't even need JavaScript.

Where is the load that is being put on something? I'm not clear on that.

Please stay where you are. There will be a knock at your door shortly.
Just ask any audiophile and he'll explain where you're wrong... and also tell you about some great $500 power cables you can buy.
Those are formats for executable content. I thought this was just a freaking image. Why not an image file format?
So basically,
Q: What file format is it in?
A: It's a program you have to run in order to see the image.
No thanks.
Making/receiving phone calls? Just a guess.

Uhhh, yeah, how many seconds until a hacker swaps the shells of two so that his hackable one looks like the unhackable one?

mCup. Apple's got the pads in place, so MicroSoft can handle the guys.
Sure they did; the original website was GONE! Just a 404.... oh, wait, it was still there. You're right.

So because of this theoretical possibility, you feel the right to force people to do certain things with their own private property?

No need to make fun of people who suffer from PNS syndrome.
