  1. On hacking SETI.... on SETI@home having Problems · · Score: 1

OK first of all, that over generalization if UNIX/Linux groups is uncalled for, but we know that. Secondly, they're writing the client and we don't have access to the source, so what's the deal, can't they just encrypt the stuff internally with a public key so people don't even know what's being sent. They have full control over this, why can't they monitor it?

  2. Ah ha! on SETI Distributed Searching · · Score: 1

Looks like you have to run the program, minimize it, and then it throws the icon in the system tray and the screen saver works. If you don't do this (don't run it, or close it), when the screen saver kicks in it simply pulls up a window with the client. Nothing in the manual about that. Must be a feature, oh well, there's alway 2.0 right?

  3. Screen saver? on SETI Distributed Searching · · Score: 1

OK, got the program, installed it on a spare NT box... How is this a screen saver? It pulls up the window, but that's it. It's not full screen and there's no way to password protect it. I musta missed something here. That and it's not showing up in the system tray either. Hmm, have to go log in as Admin....

  5. Firewire port... on Digital VCRs end Tape Tyranny · · Score: 2

I asked the Reply guys about the firewire port and if they would let us access it to pull stuff off. They said that all the hardware was there, but there was nothing in the software to use it yet. ie you'd have to download new software to use it. They're planning on using it for an add on drive to give you more space.

Looking at the specs I'd say Reply over Tivo, even with the cost. The real question is, can you find an MPEG2 encoder for cheaper. They thought the Matrix on the net was a problem, wait till people are swaping episodes of the X-files and Seinfield. Somebody's going to prevent them from letting that export option out. Someone's going to have to leak/hack the update software.

  6. You can always hack one.... on Ask Slashdot: Linux and Telephony · · Score: 1

A roommate and I took an external Cardnal voice modem and hacked a answering machine server for it. The thing could handle caller ID as well. We had great fun recording individual messages for everyone the box could resolve. Multiple mailboxes... Course the playback and interface was pretty primative, some perl scripts and sox.
I was thinking of putting it out on the Net, but due to creeping featurism the code is embarassing. :) (That and I find little time to fix things that aren't quite broken) I would imagine that each modem would have it's own little method for all the funtions. Everything on the Cardinal was AT commands. I'd recommend the box to anyone.

  7. You thought the /. effect was bad... on Melissa Creator tracked using MS's ID numbers? · · Score: 1

I'd have to agree, the poor bastard that owns SkyRoket@aol.com is toast. Whose brilliant idea was that! Oh well. Anyone dumb enough to post a 'virus' with they're own e-mail address should get whatever they throw at them. Social darwinism. :)

Still M$ getting off pretty easy on this one. That sux. God forbid they focus on patching the gaping hole this walked through! Oh well. And to think there was no-anti M$ messages in the think. What a waste. Something as simple as 'Aren't you glad your system is one big fucking lump of code?' would do.

  9. Principle is nice.... (continued) on Bell Atlantic/Mac/ADSL Crusade Fails · · Score: 1

My advice is this: Mac users, band togather, support your own. i.e. those who know how, share, or automate. (I know their are Mac coders out there, I used to be one!) Lie to BA, (well tiny fibs mabey) and once you have a good base of users, you have proof that BA is a bunch of idiots. End of story. The main problem is I suspect BA is like US West in the sence that no US West = no ADSL. I'd LOVE to drop US West like a bad habit. Pride or highspeed internet access... hmm. Tough call.

  10. Principle is nice.... on Bell Atlantic/Mac/ADSL Crusade Fails · · Score: 1

Yes, I know in principle it's nice to have a company formerly support something. But there's a limit to how long you bang your head against the wall. I have had friends at schools that can't get a simple static IP once they say the word Linux. When I got my ADSL thru US West (a saga in and of it's self) I just lied and said I had Win95, then told them to skip the install, told them I'd do it that save the $150. (Course they still charged me, but again, that's another story.
