It's obviously caused by all of the freshmen that don't know about the "other browser" yet. By May Firefox stats will probably go back up and IE will drop again until another group of youngsters go to college in the fall.
I'm a clinical engineer in a very large US hospital, in the operating room. In addition to the distractions above, we also have the old fashioned overhead pager to deal with. I used to have a pretty long attention span, but I think I have acquired ADD. I can't work on anything longer than a minute at a time and usually try to be doing two things at once so I'm not waiting. Ever. It gets better at the end of the day, but when cases are getting started, there are usually 3 things I have to do at any one time.
My strategy is to ignore eamil and my personal phone line and just worry about the emergencies for the first 5 hours of my day, then try to do the actual engineering work with whatever time is left. Works ok, but it would be nice to have more free time. Unfortunately, I just can turn off my pager.
Just to add another reference point, I have used 2.5kW lasers for cutting steel. It takes about half a second for this type of laser to pierce a 3/4" thick piece of mild steel. (Granted this is with a focal mirror to steel distance of about 1/8", but as long as you could set the focus properly, a 100kW laser should be able to do a lot of damage in 4s.)
please try to keep the timeframes consistant.
I realize this is my own personal rant, but it's much harder to determine what:
The average weekly earnings of 80 per cent of Americans in gainful employment dropped by roughly 18 per cent between l973 and l995, he reports, from $315 to $258 a week. At the same time, the real income of top managers soared by 19 per cent in just ten years between 1979 and 1989.
really means if the time frames were the same.
Mayber there weren't any interesting effects between 1973 and 1979 or between 1989 and 1995 but it would still be nice to keep the data consistant.
I don't think that I would be nearly as concered about this discussion if I believed that all of the proposals from the FBI and CIA would be openly considered. If these discussions take place in the open where citizens like the people here can have some input then I think everything will work out fine. If the discussions are closed then we can expect mostly "knee-jerk" overreactions.
I didn't think many people here would be advocating another attack against the US. This seems to be what you're doing though. The US is the biggest bully on the international stage as it's attitudes towards Israel, Iraq etc. I don't think Americans should be advocating beating the bully senseless.
I think the previous post may have missed the point. Men do not have more to offer the industry than women or vice-versa. The important part is that if there are men and women in something close to equal numbers, there will be a broader range of ideas and experiences at the table than if a group is made up of all men or all women.
The idea is not that one sex is better than the other but that the two together are better than either one alone.
I am ever glad I did not have to go through that horror to get my ADSL line hooked up. I live in Ottawa (and work for Nortel Networks which helps) so my only current choice for high speed access is Sympatico (Bell Canada's ISP). The use Nortel's 1 Meg Modem technology so as an employee all I have to pay is the installation fee and the $40/month for service and I get the modem for free. This service is a littel different in that it doesn't actaully require any changes to the wiring in my home, just a new card at the switch. I think it was about 10 days from the time I signed up to the time everything was set up and working. That is the advantage of having everything bundled in one company I guess. You can check out Nortel's 1 Meg Modem sit here and Sympatico's here. You still have to be fairly close to the switch to be able to get the service and I don't know of any way to find out other than by phoning sympatico.
Good luck to everyone attempting to get ADSL. The bandwidth is worth it, I promise.
In my opinion, the issue is not what spammers are saying, it's how they're saying it. They can advertise all they want and say whatever they want but perhaps not in my mailbox. I don't really have enough information at the moment to form an opinion on the law itself but I would disagree that spam is just free speech.
Just to let you know, 2.5 Gbps is easily achievable currently, 10 Gbps is a little more difficult but do-able. By the time you get to 20 or 40 Gbps dispersion is pretty bad and you run into other attenuation problems, that's why it's best to break the stream up into multiple wavelengths.
Also, current commercially available capacity on a fibre is about 320 Gbps, 32 x 10 Gbps.

A quick point about your sig. Computers actually make very quick, very precise mistakes. There is no such thing as an accurate mistake.

Sounds like someone is getting old. You'll be listneing to the CBC before you know it.
