Yeah, well, the downside is that the fastest I have ever downloaded was once I got something from my roommate's computer at 600Kbps. The fastest to the internet was 300Kbps. My cable modem ($40/month) is faster. So I can complain all I want.
According to Steve Campbell, the campus network is at 100% capacity. At least this spring when I was on it was. I'm sure for summer term it's not as bad.
I guess that's true. The network guys have said that the I2 has actually been up to around 45% of capacity, whereas the commodity (normal) internet is already at 100% -- around midnight every night. They were talking about banning Napster simply because of the bandwidth usage. But like I said, I don't really see much advantage to me, joe schmoe.
Not all, just those who repeat tasty sound-bites like this:
For the most part, the company's money-making Web properties are all based around Unix, with Hotmail 99 being 99 percent FreeBSD, MSN using some Apache on Solaris, bCentral ad servers on 100 percent FreeBSD, and WebTV pretty much entirely Solaris.
I have heard this same line thousands of times by MS-bashers to "prove" the "inferiority" of Windows -- After all, Microsoft doesn't even use it for their own sites! And I agree, it is somewhat humorous... the first thousand times.
However, most of the properties mentioned above were not developed ground-up by Microsoft, they were already established and MS just came by and gobbled them up. Hotmail ran FreeBSD. MS then bought them. What, they're going to magically move to IIS, just like that? If porting apps between *nix and Win* were so easy, don't you think they would have done it by now? bCentral, I believe, was also acquired (I know LinkExchange was once an independent company), as was WebTV.
So while I have no great love of MS and don't think Windows is too great either, pick something else to make fun of. This just sounds stupid.
My school is one of the I2 schools. I guess we get great speeds to other I2 schools/institutions... however, this does not affect any students because the dorms are all wired with 10Mbit Ethernet. I asked our Network services guy if they were going to upgrade the dorms to 100Mbps and he said no. He said there were a couple of servers that were connected at 100 and may someday be connected at 1Gbps, but if the dorms are still limited to 10Mbps, I don't see any real advantage (to me) to the I2 at all. Some test.
David Every runs MacKiDo, so I wouldn't ever believe anything he ever said. Just take a gander at what he considers "myths" about macos (e.g., The Mac has crappy multitasking is a myth; PCs outperform Macs is a myth; Macs cost more is a myth). Anybody who posts such blatant garbage with a straight face should not be allowed to write.
*Note: I had my own three-year love affair with the Mac until I realized the simple fact that PCs are simply better. And cheaper. So don't think this is because I'm a Mac basher or anything. I simply have always hated MacKiDo and its rabid brand of mac advocacy.
Did you really expect to win, given the legal system's track record on issues like this? At what point did it become apparent that the judge was going to rule against you? Or did the ruling come as a shock to you?
If you think about it, NBA superstars can stay more true to the original spirit of the olympics than an amateur. An amateur will see the olympics as his "big break," when he gets to shine and prove how great he is. Patrick Ewing doesn't need to prove anything to the world and can go out there just to play, or just to help his country. Of course there's a lot of room for debate here but I think that established sports players are better than amateurs for the olympics. We should put our best people in the games. After all, what is the point if not to win?
the Olympics rests upon a huge infrastructure, and this, unsuprisingly enough, costs a lot of money. How else are they going to obtain this money without licensing and sponsership deals with major corporations? Selling drugs? Running arms?
How about kickbacks and under-the-table deals, the way they've been doing it for the past few decades?
There was something I had read a few years ago that said that in order for the Olympics to be held in some city (forget which, or when), a member of the IOC board's kid had to get into stanford.
The IOC is one of the most dishonorable organizations I have ever heard of. I don't know if this is because most under-the-table deals are less public or what. But what costs so much money to the IOC anyway? The city in which the event is held picks up most of the tab, all the IOC does is rake in the advertising dough. Oh, and get kickbacks.
And everybody knows that the olympics is not "the greatest sporting event in the world," the Yankees vs. Mets world series is.
And you really think the olympics "brings the world together"? How can something that is, by definition, a competition between nations be a unifying force? If the U.S. kicks every country's ass in Soccer, do you think relations with other countries (some of which have killed losing goalies) will improve or worsen?
I hate the IOC. And, for that matter, the olympics. Pirate away.
How about everybody whose thesis is on that site get together and create a site and distribute them all for free in PDF or some snazzy format like that? I don't know how this would affect ContentVille's bottom line, but I doubt it would be for the better.
So what do you think of the Bill-Gates-as-Borg icon we have for representing Microsoft stories? Did you ever complain about that? How about all the pro-linux bias that permeates every story here? When do you complain about that?
IMO, one of the best things about Slashdot is that its biases are right out there in the open for all to see. If Slashdot has its own agenda then at least we're aware of it. Whereas CNN et al. purport to be objective and unbiased and then feed subtly biased info to the masses. I think the Slashdot model is far more honorable and far more trustworthy.
This site, like most others, is run by human beings with opinions and biases of their own. To try and deny that those biases exist or affect everything we do is futile, and stupid. So we can either embrace and accept them or try and hide them away and wait for them to creep up in some unexpected manner.
Furthermore, CmdrTaco did not sit here and say "Gore is my man, not that hitler bush," he expressed sincere disappointment with BOTH candidates, which is something I'm sure at least 50% of Americans are experiencing right now (including me).
Anybody who thought this site was some kind of bastion of objectivity has obviously never spent any real time here.
This sort of reminds me of the RIAA/Napster suit in that if they had simply let it drop -- or done it in a more subtle manner -- they would have been much better off. I mean, before the suit, how popular was Napster? Now with Napster being pasted all over the media (print, tv, and web alike) every schmoe has heard of them and their music-for-free. Now somebody will probably start an underground Apple espionage website to fight the power or some crap like that. And like I said in my previous post, what is Apple going to gain from this? What will the RIAA gain from shutting down Napster? Now that so many people are turned on to free music, even if they close Napster there are the myriad other facilities by which to search for/get whatever file your heart desires. I wonder if they even have the brains to consider something like this before taking such hasty action.
what is the point of this? The information is now all out. What damage was done? I guess it may keep some sites from running rumors in the future (uh, well, maybe not) but I don't really see what purpose this serves. If somebody violated an NDA I guess I can see why they're pissed, but this does seem sort of pointless. And what is the point of suing an unknown person? What do you get for winning? Why don't they wait until they find out who did it and THEN sue them?
And really, what harm was done? This just seems so pointless and nothing but bad PR for Apple.
I liked it but it seemed like it was just a setup for a sequel. the whole foreshadowing about how wolverine got an adamantium skeleton, etc. I was disappointed in the lack of action -- also, they never really explained what sabretooth's power was. Was he just really strong and annoying? And it was kind of lame how all the xmen were immobilized in 1 second by magneto in the statue of liberty. Like, why didn't he just kill them there?
All in all it was a good movie but I thought there was too much setup for the second episode and not enough in this one. Also, was Rogue that young? I always thought she was like 25. The best line was when wolverine said something about the uniform and cyclops says "What would you prefer, yellow spandex?" That came right after I said to my girlfriend "his uniform is supposed to be yellow." Funny.
Have you ever had to write a lambda expression? Was it easy? I had to use scheme and ML in my programming languages class and I found them really hard. I can't think that way. That is the biggest problem with functional languages; it is not a normal way to think. "If it is raining, I will not go to the park" is easy to conceptualize and easy to write in a procedural language. I don't even know what the equivalent statement would be in a functional language.
if it weren't for a thing called law enforcement, you would go around raping every woman you see.
I'm sorry if my rhetoric was lost on you. I was using "me" as a placeholder for "anybody." While I would not become a serial rapist without law enforcement, I'm sure there are many people who would.
What failing of the government are you referring to? The Diallo case? Wouldn't that have gone much better if police didn't have guns? Or maybe if crooks had no way to get guns, the cops wouldn't have shot him because they would have known they weren't at risk.
Anyone who wants to change the constitution must start his own nation? Have you never heard of amendments? Repealing an obviously flawed law is a far cry from changing the fundamental structure of the government (ie, moving from democracy to anarchy as you are suggesting). The constitution was designed with change in mind because the Founders realized there would be no way for them to anticipate all the problems that would arise in the future. Why not put their foresight into practice?
Repealing an amendment has been done before, and I encourage everyone to do it again.
How many parts of the Bill of Rights are you willing to surrender? Once your right to self-defense is gone, will you give up your right to free speech?
I'm willing to surrender the part that is a huge mistake, the part that has singlehandedly caused countless deaths, the part that was included by a paranoid people in a time when the military and the people were one and the same.
Freedom of speech/religion/press is fundamental to the fabric of this nation and this people. I will never surrender that. Freedom to bear arms restricts everyone else's freedoms greatly -- if everyone lives in fear of getting shot by their neighbors they aren't really free, are they?
I agree, you are NOT the problem. The day you forget to lock up your gun and your kid brings it to school; the day you accidentally shoot your brother who comes stumbling into your house at 3am in the dark; the day you get pissed at your boss and take out half the office -- that is the day when you become a problem.
