  1. Strings attached? on Data Haven To Open For Business - Today · · Score: 1

    http://www.havenco.com/legal/aup.html

Unacceptable publications include, but are not limited to:

    1. Material that is ruled unlawful in the jurisdiction of the originating server (Such as child pornography or other obscene material.

Once again, free speech with strings attached. Sure, nobody (I hope) has a problem with not allowing child porn, but how long is it until the powers that be put pressure on the "jurisdiction of the originating server" (the royal family of Sealand, I suppose) to make illegal whatever they don't like? It seems to have worked for them in the US and Europe. I'm skeptical.

  2. Re:The most important thing he said: on At Last And At Length: Lars Speaks · · Score: 2

I don't think that this is the point Lars is trying to make at all. You don't have the right to downloads Metallica's MP3s just because you can find them on the net any more than you have the right to use other people's credit card numbers to make purchases because such information can be found on the net.

Also in true Katz style, Jon completely neglected the fact that April Fools ends at noon on the 1st. Congratulations Jon, on showing us just who the april fool is.

  4. THIS is worth $100,000?! on Man To Live In House for One Year · · Score: 1

Maddox's first monthly paycheck from the company will be $24, but it will double every month as an incentive to stay in the house, Critcher said.

In other words, over $98,000 (assuming my math is right) to live in a house for 1 year. And the sponsors are probably covering all his expenses. Nice job, if you can get it. Perhaps somebody in finances forgot how fast exponential functions grow...

  6. Those crazy hackers at RTMark... on CNN Misrepresenting etoy vs. etoys Battle? · · Score: 1

"The group's Web site made available information, such as eToys' IP address, that would give attackers helpful ammunition to shoot eToys down."

Quick, somebody stop these guys... :)

I'm not particularly pro-DoS attacks, but given that the courts are incapable or unwilling to understand the dynamics of domain name disputes, it appears there's little recourse for etoy. eToys deserves everything they get.

  7. This is absolutely ludicrous.. on Usenet Gag Order · · Score: 2

I guess we know who was sleeping when they did all that talk about the "first amendment" and "freedom of speech" during law school.

No matter how offensive or stupid the speech, it's not up to the government to censor it.

  8. Yah... right. on 1100 MHz 'Athlon Killer' Due From Intel in December · · Score: 1

Just for a second, let's put aside the fact that the Register is a worthless rag that's wrong more than they're right and look at the rest of the story. They're talking about a launch on paper in December, with the chips not being available until a couple of months after that. Not only that, but

We now think the 800MHz rev will be the first, while Intel may be able to ramp that up by June.

So there will be no 1100 MHz part in December (and probably not one in June, either) - there MIGHT be an 800 MHz part. Roblimo would have realized this, had he bothered to read past the headline.

What do we have? The Register (an unreliable source) is telling us that Willamette will launch in december (6-9 months earlier than the rest of the world expects) with a non-existent chipset, and that it will reach a clock speed (1100 Mhz) that is unrealistic to expect from a 0.18 micron core.

As I started out - Yah... right.
