The problem is that some of those "exact" pieces of data are actually quite vague. Maybe it says "read contact data" but it doesn't necessarily tell you for what purpose, or which contacts, or anything really.
Well let's say I make this silly app called "RandomCall+" which just calls a random person on my contact list. It's like drunk dialing for sober people I guess. It is going to tell me it needs permission to read my contact data..well duh. It also has a nice feature (remember the + in the name?) that allows it to conference in another random person, but for that it needs the "read phone state and identity" permission to detect if there is a call in progress already -- that way it knows to go into conference mode. Fair enough, right?
Now you totally want this killer app, so you allow it because it obviously needs those two permissions to function. Well therein lies the problem...the latter also grants it access to your IMEI, IMSI, and device unique identifier, which is phoned home (no pun intended) to the app developer (me!), who then uses that information against you.
So pay attention to those permissions, but don't take them as The [your favorite sacred book here].
If it's that important that your communications medium for this big event have 100% uptime, you should find one that offers such terms in their SLA. Last time I checked (never, but probably don't need to) FB doesn't even have an SLA. In fact they probably have some clause in the EULA that disclaims any uptime guarantees.
I'm not suggesting that you actually find something else, I'm just stating that you need to accept the outage as an event beyond your control. So if you need to communicate with someone that badly, use an alternate form of communication (popular opinion appears to be the telephone) until it's back online rather than filling the new void in your life by coming on/. and calling people self centered and shallow jackasses. Doing so makes you just as much of one:)
And how exactly does malware "support the internet"?
Yeah, it's more that the internet (or rather the users of it) supports the malware/viruses by being ignorant and clicking on stuff that is blatently not what it claims to be.
But what are the #s? Or rather what is the user/server ratio? Why it's X to 1 of course, so as long as at least 1 out of every X users of this new distributed site runs a node, they're equalling the "server power" of facebook in a sense.
What's is X? Well I have no idea personally. But I can say that, as a business, facebook would be likely trying to minimize X to save costs. OTOH, someone likely to run a distributed node is only looking at one box, and if they are going to run the node it's because they want to run the node, not because it clears some corporate budget.
The real question there is what value of X is the critical threshhold of where the tables turn...assuming "server power" is the magical metric in the first place.
Well MySpace was on top and people were constantly using it, but I can't remember the last time I heard anyone even say anything about MySpace that wasn't along the lines of "I used to use it anymore" "facebook is better" etc.
Don't worry, the facebook bubble will burst, it's only a matter of when. And who/what other service/event will be the catalyst? Well that's a tough call.
Thanks, in a(n unsuccessful) rush to get first post I failed to realize that a burning crater would not only lose its name, but also status as a country.
Well... Mozilla _has_ concentrated on low RAM usage in the past. The actual memory usage of Gecko is significantly lower than its competitors if you load some pages and measure it.
Okay, so watch your memory usage in FF as you enjoy the blinkensegments in this picture.
When you were that child, what was your 'serious consequence' when you did something bad? Probably a demonstration of one of Newton's laws directly applied to your ass or some similar type of action that is now considered immoral or abusive to the child, and could have its own retroactive consequences. It's no wonder parents are afraid and don't bother with discipline anymore!
Not defending the parents though, just making a point. I still agree they are ultimately the responsible party.
"Starr noted that electric tracks catapult rollercoaster riders daily at theme parks. But those tracks call for speeds of 60 mph -- enough to thrill riders, but not nearly fast enough to launch something into space. The launcher would need to reach at least 10 times that speed over the course of two miles in Starr's proposal."
Why, so that he can't participate? Nobody said he had a dislike for participation.
In fact, it's A Good Thing(tm) that he can how participate as that gives him is very small amount of force to help sway/direct the future of the country.
If everyone liked "the American style of politics" this country would exceed terminal velocity on its way down the crapper. Fortunately there are a few people left with a clue to slow the decay;)
As I type this my cat, dissatisfied with my lap and boring flat desk top area, has recently chosen to lay down partially on my desk and partially on my printer output tray. The plastic bits are oddly shaped and flexing under the weight of his fat a$$, but he seems quite content.
Following his lead, and the idea of this article, I think I'm going to contact HP and buy a large format printer to replace the couch in my living room.

We buy a 1/4 cow (we split it with three other families) and it feeds us for a year. All of our produce comes from farms as well.
That's great, but think of the fast food industry. People are lazy, and want meal-sized portions already prepared for them in a vat of hot fat.
I don't see people ordering a SpicyCrispy1/4Cow to go. Err, maybe I spoke too soon.
Some of those signs (most in NYC?) are hanging out over the intersections. You'd have to pay me a pretty penny to install those.
I wonder how much they would get back selling the old ones...
BUT WHO WANTS TO PAY FOR A STREET SIGN IN ALL UPPERCASE?
Outlook doesn't get e-mail, outlook displays e-mail.
Configured to access a mailbox via POP3, it gets email.
Well, okay, it RETRs email, but that's just an implementation detail.
Nah, not troll or flaimbait...just hypocracy.

The only thing I can think of is that IE7 and beyond stepped up security enough to make a major impact.

"I used to use it anymore"
That was like some shortcircuit between "I used to use it" and "I don't use it anymore."
I fail.

I totally agree with that. But consider this...

The launcher would need to reach at least 10 times that speed
"At least"....for all those times when you can't quite do the math!
Ahh yes, I seemed to overlook the fact that (approx)7600 >= 600. I guess they were correct all along.
Well enough about that, I have to go check out that great "up to 100% off" sale at my local consumer electronics store.
"...hitting speeds of about Mach 10."

Mach 10 = 600mph ???

If your mechanic thinks that "The Little Mermaid" was a Shakespearean drama, that really doesn't affect his ability to fix your car. Same with this.
And if you think it's a Disney story, you'd be just as wrong [wikipedia.org]
And if you read the original story, its totally different than Disney's version too.
Yeah, she really wanted to be an auto mechanic.
But then where does Agnosticism fall on your religious continuium?
No, web still means what it did, but it's obsolete now as we have Web 2.0 !
Everyone knows that v1.0 is just buggy crap, and that the second iteration is what it was meant to be in the first place.
In fact with the ease of obtaining new information, the way its presented in bite-size paragraphs will make us actually more intelligent.
