I would start my gf off on something easy, like RedHat. Then as she progressed with knowledge, I would install a "harder" Linux distro for her, any way, I rarely keep OS's for any length of time without a reformat or reinstall, doesn't matter that much to me anyhow. And yes, I know you can edit the config files by hand, but RPMs vs tarballs, etc. With Slackware, I am forced to use the tarballs. Hehe. And she really can't do anything on here without running into problems. Thats why I want her to learn on RedHat and move up first. It's my time I'm wasting anyhow. :)

Here in New York state, you request to be put on a "do not call" list, you fill out the requested info (name, house # & street, phone #) and the Attorney General's office puts the name/number on the list, and it's for life, you just update the info when you move, etc. Really great, and the fine for the telemarketers calling you on the list (which is updated/published every 3 months) is $1000 per incident. Charity and that kind of jazz (police charities, local community stuff) is exempt from the fines. All in all, it's a great program. My phone has stopped ringing off the hook since I requested to be put on it. Hehe.

If they can increase the lifespan then bring it down to the Air & Space Muesum, that would be really cool, and I would wanna see that exhibit. And Linux is JUST the kernel. :-P I never claimed I had advanced knowledged of Linux, but oh well.

Uhm Ok. So it's a good thing that IIS is a ftpd, telnetd and httpd? Whatever happened to using the right tools for the right job? Or has people become lazy now and want a all-in-one package? I use Apache for my httpd, ProFTPd for my ftpd, and OpenSSH for my sshd. Oh wait, IIS cannot do SSH can it? I now must download a program to handle any sshd I need, seeing I no longer use telnetd on my Linux box. So it's better to have one bloated piece of software handling most of my daemons, then having one lightwight program per daemon?
That is SO kEwL. I guess I shall buy Win2000 Adv. Server and install IIS by default and download the CR patch and reboot, then if that's not enough, download a 200 meg Service Pack to fix some of the 60K bugs in it. Tell me WHY this is a GOOD idea? :)
That is the one good thing I like about *NIX in general, I rarely need to reboot for anything.

I had to explain to the teacher (he only used computers for grades and typing the weekly agenda sheets) what I did and how I could "fix" it for him. He gave me back the laptop after I promised I wouldn't "break" it again (seeing how I had to pratice typing or whatever my competation was that year). When we got back to school, I told my CompSci/SysAdmin what I did to the laptop, he just laughed with me and made me promise I wouldn't torment that particular teacher again.

A little side note to all of this. I brought with me a floppy to save my documents. And I come home, pop the floppy into the floppy drive, and my anti-virus beeped at me, saying the floppy had a virus on it. And I knew before hand, that was a clean floppy, no viruses, etc on it. And so I spent the rest of the year, with the SysAdmin killing the virus that had spread from the laptop to the network. Someone else had used the laptop before me. sigh.. Atleast I got to do something useful with my time then, instead of playing games & chatting on irc, I was that far ahead in my computer classes. Hehe
