    I definitely have to agree. After I made the mistake long ago of ordering something from amazon, I've been under an endless onslaught of spam from them.

    mp3.com does suck at this too- they're worse than most of the corporate spammers. I'd rather suffer the porn email than mp3- they just won't give up, or stop. argh.

    thank god for MAPS. I also block mp3.com for any incoming email on my home account :)

    I find it fascinating when I read stories about this type of thing. I wonder exactly where the normal slashdot reader lies in terms of the whole Big Bang vs Creationism argument; somehow I feel that for most people on here, any beliefs that these things came to be through some force other than an exploding pinhead are totally unacceptable.

    Where do you folks fall? Do you find the Big Bang and it's associated theorems to be a joke, or do you laugh at the concept of some deity who's saturday afternoon fun consisted of slapping together a snow globe full of planets and stars?

    I've always wondered, we geeks are a confused bunch.

    but to say "I don't *NEED* to eat meat, so therefore I *OUGHT* not to eat meat" ? that's an absolutely nonsensical viewpoint. If you are going to waste all of your short life on whining about things, pick something that actually makes a difference; help advance the human race. We're the top of the food chain, and I hate to break it to you but in the jungle animals don't all eat tofu. (although I'm sure you have a witty statement to make about how we should all eat tofu because we can.)

    I still say you're a vegetable murderer.

    one could argue that FDR caused many of the financial woes we have today. prior to his administration, the US government actually had a surplus, kind of like all INTELLIGENT people who maintain a savings account.

    While I realize there were drastic circumstances, it's still debatable if starting us on that course was better or worse in the long run.

    that, and you seriously need to learn to cope with humour. sheesh.

    While I'm not a big fan of Gore, the man does have an edge over GWB. He's just such a little kid trying to be his dad that I'd like to puke.

    Having lived in texas, I think I can openly say that he doesn't bring anything good to the table, other than tax benefits for the ultra rich. I'd like to pay less taxes on my midrange income, but that doesn't mean that I feel those tax cuts should be squandered on people making 7 figure incomes and up.

    for that matter, I don't want all those cuts going to welfare cases either; they already pay low enough taxes and get enough free crap from the gov't that I pay for.

    Where I currently live I pay over a grand a month in rent for a reasonable apt; my neighbours are on assistance and pay 200 for the same place. I like knowing that's where 800 bucks a month of my tax money goes.

    Maybe they can have a group of interns search through closets for valid ideas to use in new products.

    That, and who's going to develop the new technology that will allow more realistic ass photocopies? I never thought fuji had a really clear picture of what was more comfortable to the american worker in terms of ass photocopying.

    If we all decided that we wanted to blow it up for the fourth of july, then we should. It's our perogative as members of the human race. If someone else wanted to keep it, they should have put up some minimalls or something, you know- kind of a marking-the-territory kind of thing. my amateur experiences with telescopes haven't yielded a SINGLE parking lot view; and besides think of the tax dollars? some place like Delaware could annex mars and think of all the new corporations that could have virtual offices on mars.

    Either that, or the french could test their nuclear missles there, since the south pacific is getting rather crowded these days...

    Keep in mind that we will never get there without commercial involvement and monetary backing.

    Since the demise of the cold war, the US space program really hasn't gone very far. NASA needs some competition, or even better, should be privatized. I don't advocate pillaging everything or putting up a 500 mile wide McDonald's sign in space, but getting businesses to push ahead into space is what's really going to open up those frontiers.

    For better or worse, it's the only way it's going to happen- we need to move off this rock and spread like a disease. I'm quite partial to humanity, versus the possibility of frozen bacteria on mars, or the like.

    I guess I'm just species-ist. or whatever the word would be for that :)

    well, perhaps you want to look at suing Jon for his usage of peoples' commentaries- if your writers are ranting on slashdot during work hours, I suppose you could consider their posts your intellectual property.

    I post all my comments in ROT-26, which is a proprietary encryption method that my firm has developed. any attempt to decode it without paying the associated fees will result in you being sued!

    I personally get pissed when I submit a hardcore geekish type of story, with some good commentary, and it gets rejected to post something GREAT instead, like another damn sony robotic dog, or a repost of a story from months ago.

    Who really gives a rats ass about some of these things? Are we trying, as a group, to cater to a larger audience? What the hell is the point of being news for "nerds" but instead covering stupid fluffy bits?

    If I see another post about transmeta anything, I'm going to gag. LinusGroupies get old; he's just a guy, he works for a company, he contributes to various interesting things. you could drink beer with him just like anyone else. stop drooling over anything that has the remote hint of his name on it.

    I'd have to say they're probably the same people who have multi-gigs of anna kournikova pictures, and think that whole grits thing is funny. blah.

    Slashdot was so much better when it was in rob's dorm room.

    As far as I know, stores that ask to see your bags or hold them etc are attempting what amounts to illegal search and seizure. you are directly protected against this, and everytime I've been asked that (at best buy, compusa, other retail stores) I always tell them that I will not submit to illegal search and seizure. I haven't had a problem yet!

    Quite a few of the financial data providers use multicast over private networks to transport realtime stock quotes and data nationally/internationally. one of these is www.bridge.com. The stock markets are moving to decimalized trading, which means things like .01 cents vs. 1/16 of a dollar, etc. this ends up with much larger amounts of data being whipped around. Doing research on this for our firm I found out several things, including the fact that bridge runs all their data across an ATM backbone, doing multicast. pretty damn slick. Various other providers do this as well, but they're the one I'm most familiar with (because I have to worry about it!) Thought that might be a good example for you who are looking for actual uses that aren't all just audio/video. they've got some great whitepapers on their site regarding decimalization and their network setup, as well. take a look if you get a chance.

    I don't know about you, but I'm able to multicast financial data across our network to over 2000 hosts without causing significant problems at all. use good switches, that have capable backplanes. wirespeed is a good thing.

    People please understand that HOME PCs that you get in one wrapped up plastic shell from BigStoreCo are going to be shit, regardless of brand.

    Compaq makes what I consider to currently be the world's best Intel-based servers, in terms of functionality, cost, and price/performance.

    Don't confuse Proliant with Presario.

    the online brokerage I work for uses foundry networking equipment, and it has the option to use SSH (and only SSH) as a connectivity method. I've got to say that it now is as slick as all our unix boxen, and I'm loving it... They also make their firmware upgrades available for free, so I haven't had to pay for feature adds. (cough cough *cisco* cough) That, and the wire speed gigabit ethernet rocks too... 480Gbps backplane on those beasties.
