  1. Interesting Topic on Ask Slashdot: Another Word for "Hacker"? · · Score: 0

I don't think this will be easy to fix. Unless we advertise the correct definitions on Jerry Sprin*er or the Super Bowl the average computer user and the media won't change over easily to the correct definition.

After reading a few posts, I think we need to have us e-mail all the main news organizations and tell them. We need to put something about who we are in the e-mail to give it some credibility. Whether you are a Software Engineer, Admin, just love coding and do not not topple governments computer systems, etc.

Maybe we could put a list of VIP's up that we could e-mail and then all at once we could send them professionally written explanations of what the terms mean and see if that helps.

I still refer to myself as a Hacker around my IS colleagues but refrain from saying it around upper management and the average Joe due to the way it might be taken. As a solution to that problem, I do not believe it can be done with a new word. It will probably just take a long time.

It does not really bother me having to refrain from using the word "Hacker" around certain individuals. In my profession, I have to change the way I talk to explain very technical things to non-technical people all the time.

  2. My 2 cents on Microsoft Challenges Linux community · · Score: 1

Personally I would love to see this (I would even pay good money for a ticket for such an event, maybe we could get big Sony screens up and everything)-

Have Linus pick 9 guys and M$ pick their 10 guys. Have them go into some neutral place(like a stadium near Linux Expo while it was going on so we could watch :-) I know, I know real neutral, I can see us throwing live penguins at the M$ guys, so maybe somewhere else). You could then give each team their computer to load up their OS(they would have no idea of the system they would be getting). Give them say 12 hours?? and at the end of the day run the benchmarks.

It seems like that would at least remotely resemble a real world situation someone might face at a business. While a day isn't that long I think that is the only way it would be fare for the Linux team. I know both teams would modify their kernals, which is good, but the Linux guys could do it easier thus making the day time period very important. The day time period would keep M$ from putting 300 engineers on the task of optimizing their kernal. If a business finds a bug in the NT kernal does M$ do anything about it to optimize it... NO. The Linux community however does that almost everyday.

I could go on all day about the rules I think should be in such an "event" but I am sure everyone gets the idea. Probably never happen but it would be fun to watch all those Linux genius's work in real life. Not that we would care but of course we couldn't see any of the M$ work on the Sony screens... secret secret. That would make yet another point.

  3. GOOD STUFF on Katz vs. Taco: The Matrix · · Score: 1

The movie isn't perfect but it was damn good. Definately go see it. Flicks that are even tolerable these days are few and far between. This had some great FX I could sit there and watch the slows of Neo dodging bullets all day :-)

  4. if(NSI == No Sales Intelligence) { read this! on NSI Claims whois Database is Proprietary · · Score: 1

Why does commercialization completely have to mess this stuff up every time. This one is a no brainer. You do not have to charge people that much money to keep the system working. NO ONE should be in charge of domain names to make profits. Let the people using their head making cool web sites make money that is fine. If I don't like their web sites I won't go to them but with NSI I have to deal with them. I don't want to ever "have to" use any one business for anything.

  6. /. needs an editorial section. on But To What Purpose? · · Score: 1

I agree, this guy throws remote viewing out there like everyone knows what it means. RV isn't exactly proven to be real yet although I have read a lot about it and it is interesting.

I like the normal articles and think the editorials would be better kept in a section by themselves. Articles like this are a dime a dozen on other sites I go to. I come to /. for the good stuff I enjoy.

  7. Down with music execs! on MP3s Causing Decline in CD Sales? · · Score: 1

It isn't our fault their industry is over charging everything. If everyone and their brother weren't getting a cut out of every CD sale we wouldn't have this problem. I think it just goes to show it is time for a change. Those execs produce nothing only the artists are doing anything. I enjoy a lot of music and the artists I like I wouldn't mind paying some money to, but right now it is out of control. Believe me I don't want to see the artists get ripped off, just the over inflated music industry. I hope those execs get what they diserve.
