if you put the menus on the side, and then displays change to be largely vertical, then that interface will break. no one interface is the best for all displays, and expecting the application to understand your unique peripheral setup is not feasible.
given the existence of USB powered monitors, or battery powered tablets that allow wireless display transmission, and my personal experience using 1000s of monitors, none of which required an "external power supply".... i have to say you're an idiot.
