Gald to see this online, wish I had known of it earlier. Allows you to follow the alingment of the stars for that important research, like was tehir an eclipse that allowed christopher columbus to fool the natives when he landed or is that just a myth perpetuated into truth over time through it's re-telling. wish it included some of the known cometary bodies. different comets apperances have affected history over time and would be nice to be able to track those also.
Al districts in this area also have their own support staff. And my experience, and I hate to be mean, is they are idiots. In their defense most of them are teachers that started out interested in computers years ago and agreed to run that TRS80 computer lab the school had. ten years later they are the head of the IT department because the school can still pay them a teachers wage instead of hiring a real system admin at system admin wages. This is does not excuse the level of aregance and ignorance that I run into when dealing with these people.
We are the people that teach them and serve as mentors and troubleshooters for them. When they get in over their heads we pull them out.
As to city council members.... I have to agree with you.
I agree P2P is a great thing but it is a bit hard to do with video tape:-). That was what I was refferring to when I mentioned broadcasting movies to them as needed. We are making moves to put everything on HDs but that is some time away.
I would like to point out, as a system engineer working for a PBS station, That not a lot of people are aware of what a PBS station does for their community. For example: One of the services we provide is giving class content to teachers to use. They need a show on dinosaurs we can boradcast to them as needed. We are also the ones that broadcast the local city council meetings so you can stay informed (you do watch don't you) we provide topical on target content to that people can use it to learn. If we did not provide this for free then the teachers would have to buy this content. We know how little money the school have can they afford to pay the robber barons so that they can teach the kids? I think not, or at least they would not have as large of a selection.
The next thing we provide is free computer support. One of my key duties is helping the local school systems with their computer issues. Most schools do not have a trained system admin and cannot afford one. They usually have a computer lab teacher, who has had no training and cannot get any, trying to support the internet connection and the servers in their schools. They quickly get in over their heads and I come to their rescue providing free support to get them on their feet. And speaking of bandwidth we provide that to, all the schools come through us to get low cost bandwidth. We diseapear and their goes the schools internet access with us.
We support the community in computers, we give free workshops to teachers to show them how to use word and power point, we sponsor and run our areas great computer challenge for middle and high school age children. I was a room monitor last time myself on my own time and money.
The local PBS radio stations are part of us, when the tv part goes they go too. Besides no classical station and no public talk radio we are also the station that provides reading to the blind. Everyday we read the paper to the blind to help keep them informed. This service is provided free once again with no adds and no breaks, something a commercial station cannot do.
PBS is just not sesame street, it is ALL of the public services in an area. Those computer classes you where able to take in public school existed becuase of us. Their is no budget for these things, so when we go, tech teaching in the schools goes with us.
We are publicly supportted to free us from the ties that would stop us from providing USEFULL content and services. This way they do not have to buy them but we can provide them. When Digital TV comes to us, and takes 10 Million to upgrade (our estimated costs) it is not just the fact that we go off the air if we cannot raise the money, the kids are affected also, and that is a shame.
If you want to see the kinds of things that we provide for free to people go to www.whro.org We are streaming the content of our radio stations. Catch the show logon on fridays at 1:30pm EST laying on 89.5 . It's a free user call in show that fixs peoples problems. No hostile company beholding tech support, but knowledgable people who want to fix your problems correctly for free. It's a great example of the level of service we provide in a specific area as that show is locally created and boradcasted.
I just can't help but wonder what this is going to do when I start to nod off in the office. Head whips forward from the back of the chair and BOOM goes the harddrive....
A point of reference that might help is a class I participated in at Old Dominion University called computers and society (CS 300U). It covered the history of computting (but to a lesser degree than you are proposing) and how computers impact society. If you would like to check the page out it can be found Here . I found the course fairly comprehensive even coverring operation Sundevil ( I remember having to hide my pirated apple ][ software for that one) and other items of hacker/computer note.
Good jumping off point for developing the class you are researching.
I am currently HEAVILY engaged with this project with my current employer. I have done some testing as it is with this and here are my observations.
Go with H323 gear, if you go with the older standereds you will end up with proprietary junk and be very sorry. The wonder with H323 is that it is a protocol that covers data, voice, and sound all at once. Netmeeting is one example of a program that uses it. People conform to it allowing you to use stuff as cheap as a $200 PC , Ball Cam, Microphone unit To $15K room installations. I personally REALL like the stuff Polycomm makes. They are set top appliances with a built in camera. Just plug them into the local LAN and bam you are up and running. The Intel team stations are good for the teachers side of things.
Most important is check the gear you will need outside of the broadcasting ends. People tend to get tunnel vision when designing these systems and go for the camera and mics first. If you plan to get more than two endpoints talking you will need some sort of MCU (media control unit) this allows the IP addresses necesary for three or more participants to tie together. I recomend the one from cisco as it is easy to setup , cascadeable, and web controlable durring conferences (a definate plus). You can connect up to 4 before you need the next peice of equipment. Why this is necesary is that each MCU can handle 5 to 24 users depending on the amount of bandwifth these connections use. since you are building a new system you can skip some of the other items that incorporate ISDN into your systems.
If you have the money look into wireless mics for the teachers, the room mics don't cut it and the far ends should have room mics with muteable sounds so that feedback is reduced.
Depending on the subject being taught look into a document camera. Both the intel teamstations and the polycomm units can accept the second inputs. Basically anything that can put video to a RCA or S-video jack can be hooked up to these units.
If this is going to be a how to use a computer type course look into a VNC program. Their are several desinged for computer lab teachers that would allow you to check in on multiple computer screens. Much easier than having a novice computer user trying to describe the problem they are having , this way you can just look at their screen and the error message. I have not tried this on our sites yet but it is my next step. Papa Legba
yes you did miss smething in school. 16 is a power of binary. 2 , 4, 8, 16 , 32, 64, 128, 256 , 512 , 1024 = 2^1 , 2^2 , 2^3 , 2^4 , 2^5, 2^6...etc . Their is a reason everything computer comes in these sizes and uses these numbers. That reason is called binary.
I wonder if this sort of thing is going to start a backlash with the major networks soon. Cable channels are really starting to steal viewers.
For example southpark, or the power puff girls, or the sopranos. Cable channels are turning out shows that are stealing awards and becoming pop culture icons, usually after the major networks turn them down.
How much longer until NBC,CBS,FOX, and ABC stop turning out the drivel on the "major" channels and start taking notice that this is what people want. Probably never, they will just probably patent funny things that happen in a half hour time frame with product placement and then sue the cable channels to get them to stop. It's called the Rambus improvement model.
This measure has been pushed through by the Clinton whitehouse before he leaves office. I have to wonder if the real point is to bring the Nader democrats back into the fold. This smells of political footwork to me, and that is dangerous. This makes me worry because often these sorts of measure are not thought out for side effects before they are implimented.
My other worry is how much this is going to cost me. Companies do not pay for this stuff we do. They are going to pass the costs onto us. I have heard estimates that this is going to cost companies in the US 90 BILLION Dollars a year when implimented.
When your goverment does somethnig to help you, run screaming , they have a bad habit of saying that the operation was a success but the patient died on the table.....
They are headquarterd in Virginia which has an anit-spamming law on the books. $10 per incident. hmmm I may have to make me some money now. Can anyone say class action suit?
Thank you , exactly my point. DOn't have them if you cannot take care of them , and you cannot take care of them if you let your company work you 12 hours a day. Your not a parent then, you are like those people who donate to UNICEF to keepa child a live. A distant unreal sugar daddy.
I know this sounds like flame bait but hear me out. Several people have talked about how their companies are providing dog walking services for them while they sit inside and code......UM check your head people.
1. Why have a pet if you cannot take care of it?
2. Why is having someone else take care of the pet you do not have time for a GOOD thing?
A lot of people are saying "Ya I can work more now". You need to wake up, if you company is putting this kind of workload on you, then your are a sucker. Pay you a salary for 40 hours and make you work 80, you do realize that means per hour you make less than a Mc donalds worker right?
I think companies should provide day care for employees. Day care is a fact of life for most be it financial or that they see the benefits of sending kids to a SAFE and RELIABLE day care. The simple reason companies should provide day care is that several studies have shown that parents work better and faster if they are secure in knowing their kids are safe. If they can walk down the hall and check on them then they know this at all times. It's not just tech companies offerring this perk , and BTW for companies to do this in other countries IS COMMON!
So yes to day care, as long as your company is not using it as leverage tool to steal more of your life use it as a way to remove and excuse for leaving. "I have to go pick my kid up from daycare." Boss: "Why she is in the building...". Remember, after your 8 hours in a work day are up you do not have to make excsuses to leave, you leave because your workday is done and that is enough excuse. Do not make yourself a slave. Never bow to the power that boss that says "but why do you need to leave?" The answer should alwasy be "Cause I can" do not justify why you get to leave at the end of the day. It belittles you and makes you less human.
Remember the most powerfull word you posses is 'NO' use it and use it often. Tell them that bad planning on their part does not constitue an emergency on your part.
Oh ya , now I remember. Bongs! This reminds me so much of the competitions the stoners used to get into making the "coolest" bong. Guess it does show that computting is an adiction.... or at least a drug!
I can tell you without even looking that they are not in compliance. The city of Va beach alwasy does things on the cheap.
having recently been job hunting in this area I know that Va beach has been without a director for their computer operations for a while. The reason that this position remains unfilled is that they want someone with a MCSE and a masters in CS to fill the position. The salary? $40K. This area is so poor on pay scale that programmers only make $15 an hour on average. Tech support goes for $10 an hour and the only reason the average is that high is that Gateway and Cannon both have tech Support call centers here.
In this case I have no sympathy for Va Beach. they have sold every IT worker in the area down the river by ROUTINLEY touting how cheap their tech help is to new companies looking at the area. Va beach is reaping what it has sown. They have driven every tech who can get out , out of the area. The ones that are left are bitter and want to leave. The only thing holding me down is I want to finish my degree before I head for the hills.
So don't weep for Va Beach, if they could have gotten their claws into you then they would have happily screwed you over. M$ has done some crappy things but they have never directly and intentionally hurt my bottom line or the way I live.
Damn that is almost enough number crunching ability to compute all of my character faults and tell me why I am sitting home on a friday posting to slashdot instead of being out on a date.
The great thing I see with these is that they probably will not be removable from the items that they are placed on (like bar codes). this would give you some great oportunities to develope some neat apps for the home.
Simply set a RF receiver in every room of your house. Loose something and you can querry your box to see where it is. Give your whereis command some real power!
Also no more expired milk! embed the expiration dates into the tags. Sounds like these "Memes" are religions. The author has take the idea of absolute beliefs (religions) and given it a new carrier (a virus) instead of being passed through tradition. This reminds me a lot of the theme of Snow Crash where the human language works as a programming language and viruses are passed from person to person. In that book they are refered to as namb-shums.
Does sound interesting and I plan to check it out if I can find time to go to the store and buy it let alone find time to read it. Anyone got a copy I can load on my palm for something to do at those borring meetings I have to attend.
You are paying the price to have the latest and greatest when you buy a card at $600. Give it 6 months and save $400 or more. If they can afford to make these cards at $150 dollars now (and most are still in production) then that means they could afford to make them at $150 then.
People don't want to hear this though and that is what the video card manufactures are betting on. Same thing sony is betting on with the PS2, matter of fact it is what the guys auctioning PS2 consoles on ebay for $1K are betting.
I am not saying don't buy it, but think about it this way. if you earn $8 an hour you would have to work for 75 hours to get that card. But if you wait 6 months then you can have it for 25 hours worth of work. So when you see that hot item on the shelf ask yourself this , is that "neat" item worth the 50 extra hours you will have to slave at your crappy job (by definition of the word work all jobs are crappy, otherwise they would be called fun) to have it RIGHT now. If not don't get it, but if see your life comming to an end without it, then get it.
I hope that this will allow us to get those anoying broadcasted serial numbers out of the pentiums for good. If they won't do it, looks like we will be able to get in and do it ourselves.
Though this is very scary from the point of view that it will allow for a whole new generation of Viruses to be spawned. boot sector now bios sector....
When is the last time a game console got this much attention on it's launch. This is strange. guess the PS2 is going to be the tickle me elmo of this christmass season.
Frankly I am not going to buy it , gotta save up for a better video card:-).
Hehe I did not know a about the developement tools. That's cool.
I wonder then if this means that someone will find a way to mod one to run linux. but then again do you REALLY want to try to use a terminal window with nothing more than a game controller to enter text with? imagine a onscreen keyboard and having to pick each character out one at a time.... yuck. Command line does seem to indicate a keyboard needed.
We would all be lined up right now trying to get one.
Never underestimate someones desires because they are not inline with yours. And don't tell them to get computers , eventually they would get curios about the online world and you would only be adding to AOL's stock and sucking away precious bandwidth.

Command line does seem to indicate a keyboard needed.
We would all be lined up right now trying to get one.
