  1. Choosing sides on Google To Gain a Rival? · · Score: 2

Well, if you search for Linux using this thing the first site you get is Debian, not linux.org. (Following that are Freshmeat and Apache, incidentally.)

Google's first hits, on the other hand, are linux.org, linux.com, and RedHat.

    Could this be intentional?

  2. Re:PS9 on Final Fantasy 10 Released in Japan · · Score: 1

By my unofficial estimate, at Playstation 9 we should be up to about Final Fantasy 35.

While I have nothing against the name "Final Fantasy", unlike others on /., I really hope by 35 they'll have started a new line of names. At least once or twice.

  3. Re:Hope its as good as the hype on Final Fantasy 10 Released in Japan · · Score: 1

Actually, reviews are saying that they're cutting back on the FMV. They also eliminated the tedious fade into battle and give you the option of turning off spell graphics to speed up the game. What they particularly got rid of was the long FMV introduction to the game -- instead, it's live and apparently more "interactive". It seems complaints of previous Final Fantasies having a slow gameplay have not gone unnoticed...

Actually, anyone with Open Firmware probably uses yaboot/yabin, which isn't too bad, but the installation, configuration, and results are well behind what they should be. With OF and some firmware hacking, you *should* be able to get something reminisent of LILO.

  5. What they don't cover... on Yellow Dog Linux 2.0 Review · · Score: 1

Well, a lot, really. I thought the article was pretty poorly written.

What they really don't cover, though, is the boot loader. PPC Linux boot loaders traditionally suck, from what I remember of them. To date I haven't heard of one that really "worked" like LILO does. (Though hopefully YDL 2 or Mandrake 8 beta will.)

Of course, with more equipment than you really want to put in your car, I'm sure you can do this already. Just a wireless Internet link and a streaming MP3 player.

Well, here's to the homogenization of yet another aspect of America...

The issue isn't whether or not the product always works. In fact, something that "Just Works" isn't what's being looked for at all. People just want to be able to get help when it doesn't work.

For example, I have a QPS Que! USB CD-RW drive that's supposed to run at 4x but throws errors all over the place unless I run it at 2x. I've tried to contact QPS for a couple of months now, to no avail. Now is that good service or what?

For those that have asked, the reason these kids' private school doesn't have to respect the First Amendment is that, as a private school, they can place whatever restrictions they like on being admitted to and remaining in the school. That is, the kids haven't really lost their First Amendment rights at all -- they're still capable of saying whatever they'd like about the school. However, the school has every right to kick them out because of it. A public school, on the other hand, is required to accept everyone, so a public school (theoretically) couldn't suspend them for what they said about it.

I personally think people need to lighten up about criticism, but obviously the rest of the world doesn't agree...

    This would actually be great.

For a good look at some user-based slashbox-like entities, check out half-empty.org.

    Useful glassboxes (as they're called):

    • Favorite Ideas (Favorite People or something would be more appropriate here)
    • Newsboxes (CNN, Slashdot, anything with RDF)
    • Current score
    • User score tiers (and a rarely-used Top Ten Users)
    • A chatterbox (that mainly links to the Java and Javascript chat)

Another feature that might be nice is allowing users to rate posts so that we can skim for the good ones. That's pretty subjective, though.

Slashdot might not be the fastest source for news now, but if items had to go into a moderation queue to be voted on to the page, it would be far worse. Only the die-hards who sorted through the queue (which, I imagine, would be unbearably large with lots of duplicates) would know the news immediately. The rest of us would have to wait until whatever the vote-time was or when the vote limit was reached. (That should take at least a day to allow for an accurate vote, right?)

  16. Re:Affect hardware sales? on OS X on x86? · · Score: 2

Hey, I think Apple would do a great job making pretty colored boxes for x86 processors. It's just a processor, after all. A real Mac these days still wants exclusively USB/FireWire peripherials (maybe SCSI off a card, like I have), an ATI graphics card, lots of space for exapansion (or a small single box) and colored plastic. Of course, then there would be no benefit to using x86, since I'm pretty sure the price-to-power ratio for the two chip types isn't a big part of the cost of a Mac.

I happen to fall into all three of those categories.

But, Apple probably won't do it because they'd get completely screwed on hardware sales. It would be a big risk. (OTOH, I know a lot of people who would switch in a second, particularly if they could run X on X and Wine.)

The quality won't be top-notch, but there are a lot of corners that can be cut. These would be particularly good for people like me who would only want a cell phone so they can call in case they really have to and they're far away from a real phone. Voila! A thirty-minute disposable phone!

That's why half-empty is trying to get more users, so there's more diversity (as explained by krellis). However, there's actually a pretty good bit of support for non-consensus ideas on half-empty right now. There's actual discussion about these kind of ideas rather than flames and modding down. Now, this won't be the case when there are a whole bunch of users, but then diversity should be good enough that it'll all work out.

Actually, so far Glasscode (on half-empty) has done a good job of anti-trolling. You stake a certain number of points on each comment you make, initially restricting the number of comments you can make at once. Based on other users' rating of the value of your comments, you gain or lose points. Since you have to have a minimum number of unrisked points to post anything, if you are rated poorly often enough, you won't have enough points to post any more comments. (You'll have to get back the points slowly by rating things. Very slowly.) There have been a couple of trolls on half-empty, and they've pretty much shut up now. The system seems to work well. Soon we may find ot otherwise.

Incidentally, contrary to popular opinion, Glasscode is not a very Slashdot-like system. It's much more like K5, although half-empty, the primary Glasscode site, serves a purpose entirely different from that of either /. or K5.

Actually, half-empty (and Glasscode) is more like a BBS or Usenet on steroids!

Now we get to see if .5e can take the hits and keep on serving. Maybe get some "real" trolls too, so their points can dwindle to nothingness. (It seems to have great anti-troll strategy.)

The remainder is about the same guy trying to get more of his life-on-Mars experiments on NASA missions and encountering trouble. Ah, the beauty of government organizations. Anyway, seems like he might be able to get in on a 2005 mission.

Though I think the idea of life on Mars is a little strange and that most of the scientific experiments "showing" that there's life on Mars are jumping to conclusions just a bit, it doesn't seem like the resources this experiment would consume comes close to justifying denying an interesting experiment.
