  1. Keep dreaming about apple sueing, ever... on Toshiba's iPod Competitor · · Score: 1

Apple would have a hard time sueing in the EU, where being able to trademark a shape was thrown out of the law today. The fight, which was was over electric shavers, said that a shape could not be trademarked and claimed as intelectual property if it made the product better.

Real interesting change here for international trademark law. A really interesting change for Apple, who loves to make cool shapes that makes computing more intuitive--and then trademark them.

Shake will look and work identically on all operating systems. Plus, Shake licenses are always floating, which means that you can start Shake on any machine in your facility.

Now, that isn't to say which operating systems, but notice there is a plural there. And considering Apple didn't change this back in feb. when they bought Shake...

If this project is developed further on the sofware side, it would be interesting to be able to have a "friends" list of people who are able to track you. You could also be able to 'go offline' if you wanted to use your PDA without your stalker knowing where you are. Or a hardware on/off from turning on or off the wi-fi. Integrate this with existing IM's and this could be a really great campus tool.... Especially for finding elusive professors.

I'd like to see something like this on our campus, it'd make a great addition to our file sharing project.

  9. 'Who' votes, and, are you insane??? on eLection '04 · · Score: 2

My main concern for this method of voting is is that the ammount of fraudulant voting would skyrocket. You can't have two voting systems (internet/ballot). You must use one. Imagine this scenario:

Old lady isn't compitent to vote. Caretaker (presumably family member) gets her password and casts the vote 'for' the old lady.

    or

Vote twice! Get your password, log on and vote. Then head to the polls to vote too. After all, whos going to be able to know if you voted twice.

    or

Mail does get tampered with, or passwords are cracked, and votes just come roaring in. By who? Are they citizens? Are they even from 18+ year olds?

Face it, it's going to be a long time before we can vote from our own living rooms--excluding absentee voteing of course. The system as it is isn't very secure, but lets face it, you're not as inclined to fraudulently vote if you have to show up in person at the polls to do it.
