Ah, but the original poster was equating "bloat" with "large memory footprint", not with "poor user interface".
I agree ICQ sucks due to its poor user interface. But I think the other guy's point is that it sucks due to the immense memory cost of throwing in every possible feature and the kitchen sink.
Do the other IM systems allow you to send messages to yourself? If you're new to Jabber and want to see if your Jabber client is working, you can always talk to JabberBot. His Jabber ID is jabberbot@jabber.com. He's very friendly.
Of course this is a handy point to note. Jabber is not an IM service in it's own right. It's a conduit for other IM client / server models so it cannot replace them can it?
You are so totally wrong! Jabber is first and foremost an IM service in it's own right. Because of the open design, it just so happens you can write a gateway to translate between Jabber and any other IM system out there (or email or HTTP or whatever). But there are thousands of people using Jabber every day to chat with other people solely through Jabber without any connection to AOL, Microsoft, or anyone else.
That's an easy one to answer. The record company owns the music in almost every case. So, the record company will be the one to decide where that music goes, when, and how.
As far as a plain old Jabber server goes, the jabber.com server is probably the most stable you'll find. However, if you're trying to talk to your AOL buddies, you'll have to wait another couple weeks: http://www.jabber.com/support/serverstatus.shtml
How about an open source IM that looks like a classic AIM/ICQ/YIM client, but not only speaks IRC, but all the other IM protocols, too? And what if it was a distributed network, like email?
It's not really a project to "replace IRC", but Jabber is a major non-commercial project to do distributed messaging. It does one-to-one instant messaging and many-to-many conferencing (kinda like IRC), and it's open source.
The thing that turns me off most about the Sprint TOS is section 7.1.20 which prohibits me from using my Sprint wireless internet connection to telecommute to my job. That's pretty stupid!

Yeah, but 4.5 hours is pretty good, considering I was under the impression this was going to just be a 2 hour made-for-TV movie. So, I've been pleased with the entertainment-per-dollar ratio, especially given that it's free.
That's exactly why I like it. The actor who's playing Paul is doing such an awesome Mark Hamill impression! That and the Battlestar Galactica effects just really appeal to me.
Plus, that actor's (Alec Newman) accent is so incredibly American. I'm impressed, although a little curious why they're having him speak with a fully American accent when his mother and all his family's entourage have British accents. Only his father (William Hurt) has an American accent.

I guess one man's bloated creeping feature is another man's killer app.

And if you don't like it, you're welcome to find a job somewhere else...
Your argument holds if Apache has "slighly less raw speed". But 1/10 of the performance is not "slightly less" in my book. Todd.
When I saw the headline, I was hoping this article was about the amazing iRobot. That's what I really want for Christmas!
